Shorai Battery question

Questions

New member
I looked up the model Shorai Battery for my 2012 Spyder RT. It stated that I should use Model LFX36LS-BS12 rated at 540 ca and 36ah (12 volts). The cost is $349.95. My question is has anybody used a Shorai Battery in their Can Am Spyder.?? I have another year as far as my warranty is concerned but I am seriously thinking in replacing the stock battery with this Shorai when my warranty is up. The price is high but is this battery worth the money and will it affect any of BRP's codes..???

I have a Shorai on one of my bikes: just plug it and forget it... From what I can see with other "modern" batteries: no need of a tender and life duration x 3 or 4 times. Not wanting a modern battery is like not wanting fuel injection or electronic ignition... I do not even understand how a new/modern technology machine such as a Spyder still come with a 19th century lead thing!!!

Shorai Battery

Thank you "prmurat" for your response. I often thought the same thing about new technolgoly batteries and those old acid lead batteries still in use. I understand the cost is higher but the benefits usually outweigh their cost. I just wasn't sure about their use on these Spyders with all the sensitive codes involved.....! ;)

Put one of these in my 2010 RT last spring. No problems, no tender, always starts, very happy with it. BTW, weighs a LOT less (feels like 2 "D" cells) than the conventional lead/acid battery.

Hiya Sparks!
I'm the kind of guy who just doesn't want any trouble biting him on the bottom in the middle of a good day's ride...
Peace of mind is worth a lot to me.
(I'll PM you about SF'13 travel plans...)

The Shorai will be my next purchase. It gives the piece of mind that I have the reserve necessary since I run a lot of electrical options. It turns the engine over faster as well. When I go to start my cold RT it really sounds as if the starter is laboring and every so often if it lands on the wrong spot it cannot not push past top dead center without a second try.

You can find them as low as $319 if you shop around. Considering the cost of the farkles we put on the bike the battery price is cheap by comparison. I just spent over $500 on led side marker lights lol.

Shorai has three batteries suitable for the Spyder. You're looking at the biggest & most costly. The smallest of the three has 20 more CCAs as the OEM Spyder battery. You might get that new technology for fewer bucks if you got with the size better matched to the factory size.

Note that I am only considering CCAs and may be incorrect in other aspects of the batteries, so feel free to correct!

This battery technology seems to have lots of fans.
I'm not one of them, but then my house is filled tube radios.

Every battery technology has different operation profiles.
The CCA of this type of battery is superior to other technologies.

Amp Hours (Ah) is a better indication than CCA, IMHO, of the fitness for duty in the Spyder as the most frequent complaint seems to linked to the parasitic loads and not the energy burst needed to actually run the starter.

These batteries do have a larger aH rating but that doesn't necessarily mean you can run more loads & electrical accessories by simply installing one.
In the end it is the Spyder's ability to replenish the battery power that is limiting factor in how many loads you can run over time.
You all are missing the point on these battery's they don't have lead acid and fluid so they won't get ruined if they sit discharged in freezing wheather and will stand up to vibration better they have less internal resistance so they charge quicker and they don't develop a recharge memory

Good to know.
Although the way I drive a barely notice the difference in power even when ryding two up.

Absolutly right! One HP is not the same as the power of one hourse anymore! I dropped the original muffler for a two brother carbon fiber with a weight loss of around 21#'s. so I should have noticed the three HP difference and it felt more powerful. I then put Seal's Pup steel floorboards on with a gain of around 25#'s. it felt the same as with the two brothers muffler alone. So much for theory!

We have 4 battery tenders for 6 bikes, including the Spyder. Charging batteries is my life :roflblack:. Aside from the environmental aspect of recycling lead acid batteries every few years, if the new Li-ion & Li-iron (LFP) batteries let me reduce the sphagetti of wires and chargers in the garage that'll be a plus. Although, I might consider the Ballistic as well as the Shorai

Respectfully no, I'm not missing that point at all.
The fact they can sit in freezing weather discharged doesn't, IMHO, seem likely scenario for a Spyder.
It's not just freezing wheather if a lead acid battery sits discharged for a week or so it's been damaged and quickly becomes junk these battery's are the same ones in the best cell phones and can sit dead for long periods of time and be recharged and they come back full strength I've seen way to many lead battery's die before there time from sitting a battery will lose 1% per day of its charge add clocks and computers to that and it's easy to forget to put a trickle charge on everything in one garage= dead lead

Do you think that we could find us a vendor who'll bring them to SpyderFest 2013??
If it's already on the bike when I get home; no explaining is necessary! :roflblack::ohyea::thumbup:

The battery won't affect any codes, but I doubt if it is worth twice what a standard 21aH battery costs as I can't see any real benefit unless you take lots of short trips and run your microwave & peanut roaster at the same time.

yours has a peanut roaster? ... darn!!
