Shimmy

I have a 2012 RT A&C SE5. I recently had the rear tire replaced. The dealer did a laser alignment and said they did Nanny resets. A shimmy from 40 to 48 mph started in 2nd and 3rd gears. Most of the time it is minor but sometimes it is heavy. Especially 40 - 44 mph. Took it back to the dealer. They checked the alignment and said it was ok. They balanced both front tires. Still shimmy. Dealer says it probably is a tire out of round? Does that sound possible? Could it be a bad rear tire? Thoughts and suggestions please and thank you.

There sure are a lot of posts about this same issue. The dealer here balanced my front tires. After reading comments here I looked at my tires and counted balancing weights: front left has 6, front right has 2 not together, and the rear has 5. I am guessing that the round gold circle on the rear tire is the alignment point. That is 2"-3" from meeting the air valve. I need to get this resolve. I have some long trips coming up. Thought and suggestions please and thank you.

They only monkeyed-around with the rear tire: right?
If that's the case: they might not have gotten the bead seated fully on the rim
Or it could be a bad tire
Or they have over-or under-inflated the tire
Or they botched the alignment

I'd start with that list first: good luck!

If it's a Kenda tire, it could easily be out of round; or have one or two bad tread belts (couldn't have any more tho - they only got the two!!); or a bad sidewall belt (yeah, really just the one there!!); or a bad rear tire (what little rubber they do have ain't much chop either!!); or pretty much anything else Bob said.... but if it's a Kenda, I'd guess it's a tire related problem before anything else!! ;)

Tire Pressure

I had this same issue. I adjust the front tire pressure to 16 psi and the shimmy when away. When I set my front tire pressure any higher then that it starts to shimmy. The high the pressure the more violent the shimmy.

Kind of early for Kenda Bashing is it not Peter. :joke: My kenda's have all been great and gave me good service. My guess would be the belt was not put on correctly with the proper alignment of the belt and tire or the belt is too loose or too tight. Many cases of vibrations at certain speeds. Change direction slightly or MPH should stop this.

Probably bad tire or tires. More pressure increases the deformity with a bad belt, etc. Eventually, lower pressure will not correct the situation.

Did you see their Laser Alignment setup? Was it the ROLO tool? And do they know how to use it? Is the shimmy coming from or originating in the front or does it start in the back?

Something they did at the dealership is causing the issue. They need to figure it out but I know that can be like pulling teeth.

This why I have new car tires on the way. I hope to feel a big difference in the front end.

Little more info....

When stating you have a shimmy one assumes the front end. Changing the rear tire should not have changed your front ends performance but the alignment would. What equipment and who did the alignment could be the problem in the front end as to the rear end giving you the problem that could be balance, air pressure, belt or bead seating but I would not suspect the tire....

YES

I was in the tire and automotive business for over 20 years and I can tell you for
fact that tires AND wheels can be out of round, when they balanced it off the
Spyder they can see with their eyes if it is out of round, another thing to look for
is IF THE TIRE IS SEATED ALL THE WAY ON THE RIM if it is not fully seated you will
get a wobble or shimmy out of it..however you should feel it at all speeds. since yours is
only around 40 mph it is most likely needing to be re-balanced.

Great Post BajaRon

I love this statement, "do they know how to use it?" Some of the posts regarding alignment would make a person believe that a laser is a cure all. A great piece of equipment, but unless equipment is used by a person who knows how to use it, it solves nothing.

Decided to check tire pressure. I hadn't thought to check after picking it up from the dealer. Front were at 16 psi. Took them to 20 psi. Rear was at 24 psi. Took it to 30 psi. Went for a short ride. Didn't feel the shimmy, though not on the best of asphalt. After we get through the hurricane, I'll take a longer ride to verify and play with the psi's. Thank you for all of the replies.
