Setting miles versus meters

For some reason my miles turned to meters. So I got out my manual to reset back to miles and it just does not change. I hold the set button for 3 seconds, then the K and M appear on the screen, then I should select the down arrow for meters and the up arrow for miles. I did this over an over, but still in meters. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

The m is for miles ( not meters ) and the k is for kilometers

The owners manual is missing a step. Thanks to the internet.
