Servicing the RT ?

Ok I have a question for the RT owners out there. I took my bike in for service a week before MV to make sure I would have no issues. Well low and behold my shifter lever starts sticking on Friday. Saturday when I went to leave Lamonts I got stuck in reverse and had to get off the bike and use my hand to pry the lever up to get into first. Got it home safely (400+ miles). Went to take it to the dealer to be fixed couldn't get it into reverse pushed it out of the garage drove it to the dealer. A few hours later picked it up I asked them what the problem was he said it just needed fluid ????? Shouldn't checking this and other fluids have been part of the service ?? After all that was the point of taking it in before I left. So i'm torn I was very impressed they got me in to fix the problem ASAP but at the same time i'm like why wasn't this checked. My other question is who out there does there own work on the RT, where would I get the manual ? I mean if all it was is fluid this is something I would like to be able to take care of on my own not spend an entire day driving an hour to an hour and a half twice to get fluid put in a bike ?

Your oil level was low, that is the only fluid in the shifting of the bike. You need to check your oil more often, you may be burning oil while driving.

:agree: These bikes are pretty sensitive to oil levels...
Please try and make sure that you are completely familiar with the process of checking it**, and then work it into a routine that you won't overlook! :thumbup:

I try to check mine out every couple of weeks... I'll take it for a decent hop to warm it up fully, and then it's a simple matter of following what's in the book! :thumbup:
Oh! I do pull that body panel off beforehand just to simplify matters...

I got into the habit of checking my oil after a very long ride, about twice a month. It's the one maintence thing all owners should do to avoid issues. The second thing is everything else.:roflblack:
don't assume the dealer is actually competent until you have evidence to prove it.

No kidding, I sure learned a lot from other owners in MV !! Gonna make the effort to start figuring all this stuff out since my warranty runs out in three weeks lol

Does anyone have a lift ? if so where did you get it and how much....Our bike lift just wont do the trick when it comes to my spyder lol

If you only ride 300 to 600 miles a month. Checking oil once or twice a month is reasonable.

Another way to look at it.

Check your oil level every third fill up because you may ride 500 miles one week, 200 the next, or a 1000 miles in a week. jmo

I have the yellow motorcycle lift from Harbor Freight (coupon price around $65.00). Some folks don't like it because they say it lowers too fast. Mine doesn't...press the lowering lever with my foot all the way down and the bike lowers at a slow enough pace. Others swear by the Craftsman motorcycle lift (about $120.00) which is more expensive than he Harbor Freight model. Also I can't get my HF lift under the bike from the front but the Craftsman model will go under from the front even with the Bumpskid installed. I raise my Spyder with my HF lift inserted under the frame from he right side and place it on jack stands about every week or so just to do a thorough cleaning.

Just for the record, it is not the only fluid if you ride an SM. The clutch on the SM is hydraulic.

Good idea on the panels. THIS is why I read the forum
