Service interval----question

Hi, My 2012 RTS-SE5 Has 4300 miles on it.

I got it serviced at 600 miles. When we had that service performed we said to the shop, "When is our next service due?" They told us 4600 miles.

I looked at the Owners Manual and this information doesn't jive!

I think we are past due for our 2nd service.

What all is done at the next service? I am confused by how BRP has their chart in the manual.

Am I over due? if so am I in big trouble?

When I had the 600 mile service done at approximately 1150 miles I asked the same questions. Just like your car the next service is due 4600 miles later, not at 4600 miles. In my case it's due at about 5750 miles on my base 2013 RT SM5.

:agree: You are not overdue... only a much older manual reference the early year oil filters where 3000 was interval, might give that idea

600+4600=5200 miles

The filters were improved and service is due every 4,600 miles up from 3,000.

On the other hand if your Spyder was serviced with the older filter at 600 miles you may be better off to do the next one just a bit sooner so that you get the benefit of the newer design and the easier to use screen over the left side panel (also part of the new design).

You need to find out if the dealer used the later parts. If they didn't you may wish to get it done now.

I did mine at 4,800 because I wanted too... Oil was looking a little nasty in my opinion. That was BRP oil.
I have a SM5 so no new filter.

When I did the service at 4,800 I used Amsoil and I went to 9,600. This time oil was MUCH cleaner looking. Personally if your using BRP oil I would do it every 4,000 not 4,600.

I service my 998 at ballpark 4600 mile service intervals. The :ani29: will not blow up if you go 1,000 or so over. Just make sure the oil level is correct.

Conversely, the :spyder2: will like you if you do it more often than specified.

Thanks Bob---I think I just might do that with all the responses I am reading here. If for nothing else I guess I could just go in early at 4600 but I like the idea of the 5200 before I lay out the big bucks! Thanks again!

Just wanted to say THANKS to all of you who responded! I feel much better. Reading that manual I about had a heart skip. I am one who takes care of my equipment and really well I might add, the thought of me going over a ways was bugging me. I think I am A-Okay--and will just plan on taking it in at the 4600 miles or slightly over that.

I had my dealer in Springfield do the 600 service and I know that I got the "improved gas cap" then but not sure about the improved filter and screen. If not maybe I'll get those this time.

Does anyone know the cost of the $4600 mile service and what all they perform or should perform at that time?

I know I am going to have my fender LED's replaced, mine that I bought in Dec-2012- have LED's burned out but got replacements under warranty from the manufacturer. Just wondering what else will need to be done. My dealer is 3 hours away---and hope that they can get me in and out in one day but we will see.

There is an improved engine filter that applies to all v-twins regardless of whether they're SM's or SE's. Separate and distinct from the extra filter for the semi-automatic transmission. The newer engine filter has wire mesh around it as seen on the right in the photo.


The new filter is part number 420 956 747. The old filter ends in 745. The old filter is considered "obsolete" by BRP but dealers may still have inventory that they are trying to get rid of. Make sure they put in the 747 filter.

I bought my change kits from Baja Ron. I do not believe I got the new filter with the mesh :banghead:
The filters were made by Hi-flow.... So I do not know if they are better or not
All I can say is oil, etc was way better the 9600 mile service than the 4600 mile which the 600 was done by the dealer.

The oil change is really not that hard to do yourself just keep your receipts for proof of service and write down the dates and mileage in your manual you can save some big bucks, although a three hour ride to the dealer can be fun too:yes:
