Seat release not working on 2012 RT Limited??

When I push the key down and turn to seat unlock there is no feel of a click like past and seat not release

Is this an issue with the key switch itself or some sort of actuator? Key does work for front storage lid release

.

Try pushing down on the seat when turning the key then lift the seat. Also consider adding some wire rope to actuate the seat latch in an " emergency" I have an emergency release on both the frunk and the seat. I also lube the latches once a year.

If the others answers Above don't work I can tell you how to get the seat open .... and what to do to prevent it from occurring ..... Mike

Hi Lew

I have tried pushing down on the seat and also pulling up on it. The seat opening activation was periodically giving me issues except for when I pulled up on the seat when turning he key.

I installed a cord from the release located under the seat as a precaution last fall (thankfully) and n ow that is only way I can get the seat to open.

Also, what did you do to give yourself an emergency release on the frunk?

Thanks

Larry

If you have the Frunk open , great ...... take the two plastic covers off - the ones on either side of the Latch .... gives you some room to work ... what you want to do is add a cable ( Home Depot sells very thin cable by the foot with or a plastic cover ). .... I put tape over ALL the nearby holes by the latch .... then I removed the latch .... I drilled a small hole at the end / top ( this gives you better leverage ) then put the cable thru the hole .... I used a 1/8 pop rivet ( take out the mandrel first ) and crimped it twice onto the cable end .... this acts as as a STOP .... for the other end ( which you pull ) I just drilled a double size hole in a piece of wood put the cable thru , then looped it back in the same hole and pulled it tight., it won't side thru ..... I then put the cable to the right ( as you face the spyder ) and put it behind the grill ..... re-attach the Latch .... you can either leave the OEM cable connected to the ignition switch or re-move it ... I did .... I only use the new DIY cable pull ..... good luck .... Mike

Hi Mike

Very interested in hearing how to prevent this situation in future...

Larry

I removed the gas seat strut and replaced it with a very stiff metal rod ( I have pics in an album ) .... I used a small piece of ridged building foam or you use anything you like .... after pulling on the OEM release cable I put the foam behind the latch to keep it un-locked ALL the time .... our gas tanks are so small no one is going to try and siphon it out...... good luck .... Thanks Mike

I removed the part that goes into the seat release mechanism ( located on seat) so the seat can be raised at any time. Do you see any problem with riding without that part installed on the seat? (Other than anyone now has access to the gas cap etc.)

Larry

Thanks

This looks like a great winter project for me, always looking for a way to fill up my days up here in the cold Ontario winters. Would be a shame to not have access to the frunk if you have items in there.

When I was a vendor I met someone who re-moved that " locating " pin ..... well the seat moved and caused the seat to rub against the tank ... it scraped the paint off ..... So No I don't recommend re-moving it ..... I told you How I fixed mine. .... good luck .... Mike

I will reinstall the pin, don’t want to scrape paint off the tank.

I had the same problem with my 2012 RT, and used the solution you mentioned. Now I have a small wire attached to my seat mechanism so I can open the seat regardless of the switch. I did the same with the frunk. Great idea, and it works! :-)

I had tied a brown shoe lace to the seat release mech and had end tucked into my storage compartment on the tank but was always worried I would forget to put it back in place after a fill up. Now I have both

Where did you attach the wire on the frunk release mech?

If you do a search in the top of the page you will probably find some pictures!! I replaced the cable on my seat, haven't done the emergency release yet, but know I don't want to do a cable behind the key any time soon again!!:banghead: Lot's of bandaids,, Oh ya!!!

On the initial walkthru when I picked up the new bike from the dealer I was specifically told to turn the key and grasp the forward part of the seat that is on the right side of the bike (opposite the gas cap) in order to lift the seat.
He said people commonly try to pull up on the seat from all other places and wind up trying to force it open which could put undue stress on the seat struts.
He was right…on my bike if I try to lift from any other point on the seat than he told me to the seat will not open…at all.
I just wish the seat would open taller to keep from having to stoop so low to access the gas cap.
