Sears trunks on sale

I ordered the large...is this going to be too big?

Basically, the large is 5" wider than the medium, 1-1/2' longer and the same height. I think they all use the same mounting plate, so look at the photos and imagine it being about 2-1/2 wider on each side. It should be no problem at all. For $10 more, the large is really a better value, but I am very happy with the medium.

Thanks for the info on that...I saw the price differences but not the size differences on the Sears website...

I figured if you really want to be able to fit a full faceshield, better to go with the large.

Also, I have the sport rack, so I'm hoping it's not hard to attach the bracket/case...

My HJC full face (M) fits inside the medium case so the large will be an easy fit for any size full face helmet. Attaching the supplied mounting plate to the sport rack plate is really easy. Set the mounting plate on the sport rack so that the front of the mounting plate is near the front of the sport rack and mark where to drill the holes. I used my own hardware in place of the large bolts supplied. I also did not need to use the brackets that they send. If you look at the posted photos, you can see the mounted plate with both a top and bottom view. I used three holes, two at the front of the plate and one at the rear. You need to use a 3/4" spacer at the rear to allow the mounting plate to clear the rear lip of the sport plate. The case then just snaps onto the mounting plate.

I thought about mounting mine that way as well but chickened out because I really didn't trust myself drilling through that plate.

With just the two angle brackets at the front and no screw or bolt holding the rear part of the plate down, did you notice any vibration of the plate/case on rough roads. I can see that the backrest adjuster handle provides support for the plate, but what keeps the plate from bouncing up on bumps?

I worried about that to. I wasn't sure how it was going to not bounce around a lot but I was surprised to find that is stayed down pretty tight on that adjuster handle. In fact it's almost to tight on that handle. I made sure the angle brackets had a bend such that it forced the mounting plate to lay down with pressure on that handle.

I was thinking tonight that I might find a way to relieve some of the pressure on the handle as the mounting plate was rubbing on the handle a little more that I wanted.

Bottom line is that it works better than I thought it would..
And no drilling!:ohyea:

Found that the orange grooved trim pieces on the Sears top case are held in place by three small screws. Removed them, wiped them down with mineral spirits and then applied a couple of coats of Krylon Fusion spray paint for plastic. Silver metallic is a close match for the Spyder/Givi silver and looks better than the orange. Krylon Fusion has a yellow and red that are close to Spyder color and would look better than the orange. There might be a better match paint wise, but based on my past experience painting plastic, I decided to try the Fusion. It takes seven days to fully cure and is supposed to bond with the plastic. Dried in 15 minutes and ready to handle in an hour. With the trim pieces off, no masking, overspray or usual paint issues.

Hey cool idea junkie.
I never even thought of that. I didn't care much for that redish/orange band anyway.
I'll go out and get the yellow and give it a shot.
Thanks for the heads up!!!!
I'll post pics when I'm done.

Was reading about the krylon fusion...the sunbeam yellow looks very close to the millennium yellow...just can't find the stuff online anywhere...guess they have it at Walmart, ACE, or some other stores.

Anyway, it says no need for primer or anything....can just paint over what is there...any truth to this, provided all is new and smooth?

The yellow looks close and in any case, would look better than the orange. You should not have to look online since it is available at Walmart, Sears, Home Depot, True Value, ACE, Do IT Best. Wipe the trim strips with paint thinner to degloss them and then hit them with the Fusion. No primer, no sanding, actually pretty simply. A bit of care is needed not to overspray the groove areas and create runs. Lots of passes with light spray, wait 15 minutes and recoat. I hate prepaint routine and this was easy. I'm not a chemist, but online reviews say this stuff actually does bond to the plastic. $5 and a few minutes of your time.

sounds easy enough...and, as per your instructions, you remove the plastic strips anyway...so, no way to mess anything up with spraying...

I'll get to one of those stores and buy some paint thinner and the fusion...oh, after you use the thinner, how long did you wait before spraying the paint? 2 coats work well? Good, that means I need only 1 bottle of fusion yellow...

1 can of fusion is plenty. I painted the top of the box black (it is much more glossy now) I like the idea of painting the red/orange part! Very creative!

Bone: I have the large box on my sport rack .....works great!

You drilled it into the rack, eh? I guess there is no other way to do this short of drilling into the sport rack...

Have you posted any pics of the paint job on the top of the case?

See the posted pics. Three 1/4" holes in the sport rack plate are all you need. If you ever want to just use the sport rack plate alone, just fill the holes with some short 1/4" stainless steel screw head bolts and its looks just fine.

Hey folks..
I to bought one of these from Sears. The medium sized one.
Then came the quest of figuring out how to get it mounted on the back of my Spyder WITH the backrest.
Well after a couple of iterations, I was able to come up with a solution for just a couple of bucks, some brackets, a hacksaw and a couple of new bolts.
We tried it last weekend and it worked perfectly. (Check out the cool little chrome spider on the top of the case):2thumbs:
I didn't like the Iron Cross that was on the case so I covered it with the spider!

I can post more details if any one is interested.
Pretty cheap alternative to some of those other luggage carriers.

Thanks to you ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL. :2thumbs: I just placed an order for this, with taxes it cost me 59 $$ :2thumbs:

I will definetly buzz you once I receive it. This will be my second fitting for my Yellow 2009 SE5.
I successfully installed the Sport rack and the back rest my self. Now I will try my hands at this one.

I will also try to paint it yellow.

Thanks again :spyder2::spyder2::spyder2:

I saw this thread and sent sledhead a message. He was kind enough to share the parts list he came up with. I ordered the Glossy Black Motorcycle Trunk from Sears. When it arrived I ran to the hardware store with my list of parts. I was half way home (I thought) Ever have your fabrication ideas... not come to fruition? Man, it took a couple days and more than a couple trips to the hardware store (made my last one this morning) but I finally have a finished product that works for me.

I found a knee pad with an elastic strap with velcro connections. I popped the back rest and strapped on the knee pad, then I attached the bracket I made with the mounting plate for the trunk.

This should make the trip to Chicago a little easier. Thanks for the ideas guys.

I am really pissed off at sears...I ordered mine on May 20th and it apparently never went out, even when they had it in stock.

So, 3 weeks later, and several emails and phone calls, I ordered again and now they're out.

Sears really sucks! The people who work there are completely incompetent and nobody knows how to get anything done...what a bunch of cretins.

I'd say 3 emails, with NEVER a response, and an hour or two on the phone with some idiots, and still no trunk. Can we get this trunk somewhere else for around the same price? I won't recommend sears to anyone after this BS...
