Se5 RS loud clunk sound

I have a 2010 se5. A few times when my Spyder geared down automatically then a very loud clunk sound occurred. Very worrying. Any ideas at what it could be?

Thanks in advance

Hi terminal,

Re: geared down automatically then a very loud clunk sound occurred

I have an '08 and noticed this also. Now, I usually just shift down myself to keep the RPM's up.

I think it is normal when downshifting automatically.

check oil level

the se is VERY sensitive to a low oil level. it may or may not have something to do with your clunk.

A clunk on automatic downshift is normal, however an extremely loud clunk is not. I agree with COZ that the SE5 is very sensitive to low oil. I know yours was overfilled, but when the SE5 is low on oil, it will have a difficult time both upshifting AND downshifting. Our ST-L will do this if it is a bit low...topping it off always corrects the problem though. I now check the oil level on both bikes regularly. Like most Spyder owners, you will get to know when your bike doesn't sound/feel right. Always go with your instinct and check out any suspicious sounds/feels. Better safe than sorry is my motto.

Good luck on diagnosing your inordinately loud clunk and keep us posted :-)

clunks

mine clunks real swell going from neutral to first, but thats the only time it does it. nature of the beast.

I havnt been able to take my spyder in to the shop yet. It still makes that very loud sound sometimes, but only going down into second gear.
I now have a check transmission code: p0826
What is this and is there anything I can do to fix it?
Thanks in advance

Bummer..!!

according to the code it is going to require the BUDS system and that would have to be done by a dealer. Seems there is a shift sensor causing the problem. Possibly shifting at the wrong moment...:gaah:

Okay, thanks. It had only happened when in first gear, happened twice in the last month. I ride it every day at the moment

The code P0826 - Shift up/down out of range - Switch defect

It may be a damaged wire or the switch is disconnected or defective.

You need to take it to a dealer, but before doing that clean and check the wires and connections around the transmission and the shifting plate. That what the manual said.
