SE-5 Shift Problems

frank3

RT-S PE#0180
Saturday, while on a ride, experienced problems with the tranny on my 2010 RT-S, SE-5. Accelerating onto a highway and shifting up, got to 2nd and it refused to shift up to 3rd. Slowed down and tried to shift down to no avail. Shut Rt off, waited about 5 min. to allow computer to reset and restarted, shifted fine and proceded to my next scheduled stop. Spent about 30 min. there and restarted Rt and left. Accelerating again onto highway and Rt experienced same problem in 3rd gear. Refused to shift up to 4th or shift down. Pulled over and shut Rt down, waited 5 min. again and this time it still refused to shift. Took off in 3rd gear (that's an experience) and proceded down highway in 3rd toward my dealership. About 3 miles down road the Rt shifted up into 4th without my doing anything. Not able to shift up or down out of 4th. Got to city streets and forced to leave 3 stop signs in 4th gear (yes the Rt will do it). Got to dealership late in their day and nothing easy to find so Rt is still there. Ruined my plans for a trip to OK City on Tuesday because they're closed Mon and I was scheduled to leave early Tue. morning. Anxious to see what they find and glad it didn't happen during trip on lonely stretch of interstate in southern Kansas. I may have to examine the Lemon Laws in Missouri. This is the 3rd time the RT has had a major problem like this. Exhaust header broke in colorado and rear compartment lock cyl fell apart in Iowa. Really frustrating and hard to feel like the Rt is anything close to RELIABLE.:gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah::gaah:

RT has 12,500 miles with 12,000 mile service 2week and half ago. Checked the oil on Friday just before problem and it was slightly over full. Typ. after service. I think the tech always faults on the high side when changing the oil. WAS hoping to get 15K prior to the first snow fall. don't know if that'll happen now. Buds says to check wiring, connectors and shift sol.

Follow up

Called my dealer today and was told that one of the computer modules is bad and that they have ordered a new one. I,m very unhappy with the reliability of my RT. I love the RT and can't see my self ridding anything else but this particular unit is causing me much too much grief. I doubt any lemon law applies because it's always something new. Three times now that problems have either ruined a trip or caused me to cancel a trip altogether. I'd love to purchase a 2011 unit thinking it may be more reliable but I refuse to throw more money at this problem. Got to tell you, I love ridding this thing and really miss it when it's in the shop. Took it in last Saturday and looks like I may not see it for another week so that will be 2 weeks without it. Exhaust header break caused me to loose it for 2 weeks earlier this year and total failure of the rear trunk lock took 3 days to resolve. All this and not counting the DPS recall and other minor problems. I've got over 12,000 miles on it and would like to think I'd put another 3K on it this year but it's not looking like it. I'm SAD, SAD, SAD.

RTS SHIFTING PRBLEM

Frank, I experienced a similar problem with my RT S 2011 model. I was at a traffic light at which time it would not move forward. I tried putting it in reverse and still no luck. I finally gave up and had it towed back to the dealer. Still waiting for an answer.

When mine failed, it would not shift out of 4th gear. limped back to dealer (about 15 miles through heavy city traffic). They had it over 2 weeks, finally had to replace a shift sol. valve. Good Luck

Frank and Major, I know you have posted this other places...which is good. I am waiting for my red 2011 RT-S SE5. This and other reports make me nervous. I bought a Wing in 1995 and a second one in 2002 and NEVER had a problem with either....NONE. I have 59K on my present trike. My Spyder dealer is 50 miles away and I ride some in west Texas where there is not a house for 50 miles. No cell service in some of the areas....break down out there in the summer and the buzzards have lunch...ha ha (I will carry extra water with me, gas too, with the poor mileage)

I am still going to get the Spyder, but I am disappointed in the reliablity of the machine....I hope BRP reads these posts and acts accordingly....

I hope your are error free from now on.

You don't want me to dig up some Goldwing reliability issues from the GL board do you?
All products have issues, some more than others and there are plenty of folks here that have thousands of miles on their Spyders with zero problems just like you and your Wings. I'm just saying.

To go along with George, I never had any problems with my wings either.(1200, 2 1500's and 3 1800's) The recall stuff I am not counting as a problem just as I would or no not count recall issues as a problem with the spyder.. I have never been left along the side of the road by a wing and was not left there by the Victory Vision either. I am hoping for the same "luck" with my 11 RTS.

Willy

I am the last to argue the reliability of the Wing. I have two friends who had terrible problems with their machines. I know stuff happens and the Spyder is much more complicated than the Wing, however we should remember there are 100 times more Wings on the road than Spyders and the Spyders are a fairly new production scoot.

I look forward to getting my RT and know it will be error free. However, I do plan on taking one of my first rides to far south Texas to a well known practicing Curandero for her blessing.....:D

I have had very good luck with this lady. Several years ago, she offered me her secret diet for $2,000. While expensive, I was surprised on how well it worked. I gave her the $2,000 and she whispered in my ear..."No third helpings"! I followed this diet, and it works!
