Safty recall on DPS

I got a Safty recall notice on my RTS #42 ,for defective DPS unit,,called dealer and was told BRP do not have enough DPS moduals to replace the defective ones,,,,,was told to bring in my RTS and leave for 2-3 weeks so they can remove mine and send back for repaires,,,,, not happy with BRP responce to (as stated in recall letter) may cause your vechicle to steer out of lane which increases the possiblity of a crash with other traffic or drive off the road...... waiting 2-3 weeks for repaires is a bit frustrating to me....:gaah:

This isn't the way it is supposed to happen. The dealer is automatically sent DPS units for 10% of the Spyders he has ordered from BRP. As he replaces these units, he sends back the replaced units, and gets new ones in exchange. Dealers that are removing additional boxes and sending them in are trying to "bend" the system to fit their own desires. Of course the poor customer takes the brunt of this. I feel sorry for any owner that gets bullied into this method.

As far as safety is concerned, the letter says just about the same thing the letter for the first steering recall did, about two years ago. I can't tell you what to do, but I know neither of our two Spyders has changed just because of a letter. There is no sudden, increased danger. They have merely made you aware of a possibility that was already there. Whether or not you continue to ride, is your decision. BRP has not told you to stop riding, just what 1% of riders may experience.

If I was you, I would be asking my dealer some hard questions before they could hold my Spyder for ransom.
First question..."What became of the initial DPS units you received?"
Second question..."Did you return them as instructed?"
Third question..."When do you expect to receive the exchanged units?"
Fourth question..."How many units are you expecting for my model?"
Fifth question..."Why can't I just get on a waiting list, and you can call me when the parts come in?"

I was one of the 1%. I didn't like it but thanks to this forum I knew what was happening and didn't panic. I just kept a firm grip and didn't over correct. Firm pressure and I was still in control. I rode it for 50 miles like that and then took it to the dealer for the first and then the second recall. That was last year.

DPS recall and dealers

I agree with the Prof. I haven't received my notice, but called my dealer because of what I read here. I called my dealer, which is not a big volume place, and they said the units were on the way. They will call when they are in about Oct. 1. I agree the problem my be with the dealer. I have had no problem with the DPS on my RT, but it is included in the recall.:2thumbs:

Me thinks a dealer position

My warranty dealer is not my selling dealer. BUT I could not ask for better customer service.
I live a 4 hr. ryde (1 way) to their business. He will call me when the dps comes in for my RT..and then schedule an appointment. He said yes BRP sends out a % of replacement parts based on number of units SOLD..send those in and they will next day an = number. I asked how does it work for me since my selling dealer is located in IL...service mgr. says let me get it for you. Didn't ask him how..nor do I care...it will get done.
Makes it difficult when you have a less than cooperative service department..fortunately not what I am experiencing.:2thumbs:

As I understand it the units shipped to the dealers are NEW units, we call them 2G ( 2nd generation). They are not "repaired" units. I think your dealer is slightly off center on this one. You seem to be new on the forum, so I can understand your apprehensions for riding after what your dealer told you. Like Scotty said, we cannot tell you to ride, but I can tell you that I never stopped riding our 2008 SE5 when the first DPS incident happened almost 2 years ago. I got the 2G DPS Wednesday at 40K miles.

Amazing how dealers handle things

I received my recall letter this past Thursday. Called my dealer(Florida Motorsports in Naples, FL) same day. Owen told me to bring my RTS in on Friday. It took over 5 hours to install the new unit, but it's done and I am a happy:2thumbs: Sypder owner.
P.S. He said my unit was bad. I didn't know it was. Great service

Last Monday I posted that when I called my dealer about getting the recall service done he told me that he had to change out his floor models first. I was frustrated as I thought he wasn't going to service the floor models until they were sold. On Tuesday I spoke with my dealer again and was assured that he had scheduled his floor models for the service and I would be first on the list when the next shipment of units came in. On Wednesday my phone rang and it was Carlo from BRP calling to ask me about my posting. He was concerned about what I had posted and offered to call my dealer for me. I told him that I was okay with my dealers response.

He explained how the recall is working and their reason for sending units on the 10% basis. They wanted to be sure that units go to the dealers that have sold Spyders, those who will likely be servicing the same units. He also said that they have enough units available to complete the recall and that they ship them immediately upon receiving the old units. Dealers should receive them in about 3 days.

I was incredibly impressed that not only do they watch our posts but that he took the time to call me. I will be riding to SITS without the replacement but I am confident that I will not have any problems as I haven't experienced any yet.

Very pleased to read that ^^^^

Our dealer is also our service dealer and we are beyond happy. They called us before we got the notice in the mail. Gave us the option to get the new DPS now or let the next person have it... Yeah we chose to be selfish... We get our baby back next week

My dealer is Family Powersports in San Angelo, Texas. From the sales department to the parts department to the service department, they have treated me and my wife exceptionally well and have done their work very professionally.

I called them on Tuesday morning, 9-14-10, about another small issue and, since I had seen the recall on Spyderlovers, asked about that as well. The service manager confirmed the recall and said if I could have it there by noon they would change out the DPS that day. I rode it about 35 miles to their shop and they started work on it almost immediately. They got the DPS installed but they encountered some problems getting everything set up in BUDDS. They offered to stay after quitting time and finish it but I said that wasn't necessary. I had to come back to San Angelo the next day anyway.

I picked up the RT on Wednesday and it rides and steers great. Just wanted to brag on Family Powersports just a bit. I got my recall letter on Friday but the work is already done.

I called my dealer on Fri. and the DPS will be installed on Tues.

I feel lucky with my dealer, Pleasant Valley Marine in Florence, KY.

Called my dealer on Tuesday and had the unit replaced on Friday. When I dropped the spyder off on Friday there were already 9 ppl on the list for replacement dps after me. They only had 3 units and one of them was mine. They sold an RT while I was there and so I am sure they had to replace that one too before it could leave the store. They said they were starting a list and the others would be called for replacement as soon as they received new units.

I immediately noticed the difference in steering when I rode my spyder around the lot. It steered much better and easier than it has since I had the steering issue last year. I was one of the 1% that had serious steering issues. The tech told me some aren't liking the new dps because the steering is too touchy at highway speeds. I guess I will have to find out for myself shortly :) I haven't taken it out for a ride since having the new dps installed (luvbugs are bad right now) but I truly hope this fixes the issues we have had.

Called my dealer RayC's in Lapeer Michigan. Told me will put me on waiting list. I dont have an issue as I have never experienced a dps problem in near 8K so I said take your time I am in no hurry. Was also told it is a 5-6 hr job and as such would come and pick it up from my house ( 60 miles), keep it overnight and deliver next day using an enclosed trailer. NOW THAT IS SOME SERVICE. That is why three months ago I also bought a Harley tri glide ultra classic from this dealer.

Two Different DPSs

Dealer said they have the replacement DPS for my 2008 RS but haven't received any for my 2010 RT .

Are they actually different DPS's ? One for the 08 and a different one for the 2010 RT ?

The RT and RS boxes are different.

I received my recall letter Thursday evening, and already had a 600mi service scheduled for Friday at 11a at Las Cruces Motorsports. Asked about the recall when I checked in. They had 1 of the new RT units left, but it would likely take overnight to finish. They knocked the work out by closing time Friday. Way to Go! Las Cruces Motorsports.:clap:

I haven't yet received a recall letter for either of my two '09 SE5s. Are there any people on the forum who still have not yet received a letter? I'm not in a big hurry to have the replacement, as my wife and I have never had a problem with either of our DPS units, but was wondering if BRP is pushing out recall notices in waves as opposed to all at once...
