If it's an animal, you don't know which direction the critter will jump, so swerving may not help.
Besides all the hazards already mentioned, I'd add hay bales. Once I was in my car on the interstate, left lane behind a truck going too slow. The truck suddenly moved to the right lane between some cars and I saw a small hay bale bouncing toward me. It had fallen off a pick-up that was overloaded.
