I'm curious as well; I know that a full set of J&Ms are about $200...
I'd like to hear about the installatiuon of the front set.. How deep into the Tupperware do you need to tunnel in order to get them situated? :shocked:

You'd think that there would be high end speaker replacements that are the same size as OEM.
When I replaced the speakers on my Harley (when I had it), I got high end ones that were a perfect fit.
The sound difference was amazing !!!

I am really disappointed in the sound from the $22K spyder RTS as well. When I get around to it, I may replace it for tunes when the bike is parked and I am working on it or something. Otherwise, I plan on using the head phones in the helmet 90% of the time.

Anyone know the dimnesions of the speakers in the RTS?

I used to be an audiophile back in the day (still get the bug, but I am most of the time lazy).

The interaction between speakers and the room acoustics plays an important part in sound quality. Sound vibrations are reflected from walls, floor and ceiling, and are affected by the contents of the room. Room dimensions can create standing waves at particular (usually low) frequencies. There are devices and materials for room treatment that affect sound quality. Soft materials, such as draperies and carpets, can absorb higher frequencies, whereas hard walls and floors can cause excess reverberation. In the case of motorcycles, there are not much materials to where the sound vibrations can bounce off, so no matter the quality of the speakers the sound will not be exactly the best. The remedy of this which have been attemted from other owners is to add a layer of foam inside the Spyder's speaker gap and place the speaker inside this foam. Unfortuatly, this will not improve much because most of your sound vibrations come from the outside of the woofer. It might give you better bass, but this could damage the speaker due to the foam on the inside compressing the vibrations and eventually tearing up the woofer when the air needs to escape the sealed area.

In short, the best thing the speakers on ANY motorcycle work for is when being parked and enjoying a tailgate party or a scenic stop. For rides, either a good set of earphones (which I hardly recomend because they seal your ears and block any outside sounds) or inside the helmet speakers would be the best bet.

I think it was Lamont who mentioned that the Polk speakers come with a foam "cup"...
I do think the J&M makes a drop-in replacement. I've got a friend out in B.C. who swears that the difference in sound quality is amazing...

Although I am an audiophile as well, I dont expect much from the speakers as I assume the back of the speakers is pretty open. That being said, I heard a Harley recently that sounded like a car stereo even over the ridiculous pipe

Correct.... http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/...Replacement-on-the-RT&highlight=foam+speakers and he did not like the results until Clueless told him to cut holes on the "cups" (baffles) to prevent woofer tear but in the end Lamont didn't care for the sound.

It all depends on the POWER... I've always favored on adding a ampilfier for louder acustics and add separate tweeters away from the speakers, making the speakers work the resonance (deep bass and percussions) and the tweeters the higher acustics (voice, guitars) (that would be a nice project but I would rather rYde :doorag. J&M makes good quality of audio equipment, but these types of selections are more than brand choice. For a more educated decision, I always go to Crutchfield (but get the equipment elsewhere).

The J&M are 2 ohm speakers and the Polks 4 ohm. That gives the J&M more volume than the Polks. There are other marine rated 5 1/4 speakers on Amazon I would have likely tried instead of the Polks, for half the price of J&Ms, had I known about them.

Relaced stock fronts w J&M and installed their rears. Thought it required the control so bought the stock kit too. Come to find dntt nd the controls oh well but that left me with stock speaker set left over. $50 all four anyone? Love the J&M just wish Id spent the $ on bigears n Bluetooth instead. They sounded great on the roads around MV but on the highway not :thumbdown:

When I upgraded the speakers on my ElectraGlide, the difference was astounding.
Clear as can be and as loud as I wanted.

That settles it; the J&Ms are going to have to move up on "The List"...

(Ted Nugesnt, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath all sound better when your eardrums are almost ready to start bleeding! :shocked

I just talked to Tiffany at CustomDynamics about the upgrade speakers (J&M) they offer.
She said she will call them and get back to me.
She is going to find out how much better (distortion, clarity and volume) they are over the RT's OEM speakers.
If it's a huge difference, I'm in !! If not, then I have to think on it.
LOL I hope its a night & day difference !!!!

J&M said that the difference between Spyder OEM vs they're speakers is significantly better in all areas.

J&M said that fitment is the exact same as OEM.

LOL still gonna be a challenge for me !!!

Please do me a favor: take LOTS of notes and pictures of the installation; Getting everything off of the front end of the bike for this is what's still got my hand over my wallet... :shocked:

This past winter I upgraded the speakers to the J&M speakers. Installation is challenging for sure but really only because of the amount of dismantling you have to do to the Spyder. Personally I thought fronts were a little more involved then the backs? However again only time consuming, not really difficult. They are a direct "plug and play" set-up for the Spyder. The performance to me is for sure better, however I would not say it is night and day by any means? Really though less than $ 200.00 it was not a huge investment so in the end............................I would probably do it again. :dontknow:
