RT Top Case

BRP has the RT top case on sale for $1,663.99. This is several hundred dollars off. I have the 2020 RT Base so, no trunk. Is this worth that price? They don’t exactly explain it very well. They also only have one picture. Does it come with the speakers does it come with the charging port? I guess I want to know what I will get. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know there are other options that are cheaper but you have to do some fabricating. Not really into that. Also, what else would I need to install it?

Thanks.

Steve

Nice that they knocked $400 off but that's still a LOT of money. It wouldn't be worth it to me. It comes with speakers and the USB charging ports. To install, you have to remove the passenger seat the lift up on the rear (body colored) cover then gently pull it off the bike. You might have to wiggle it off one side at a time. Be careful. It will crack. Once that's off, you'll see a rubber cover just behind the passenger seat in the middle of the bike (side to side). Lift that rubber cover off, place the OEM top case in the right area and plug the connector from the top case in. The top case will have the same horseshoe shaped parts like your base model cover. Slide those in just like you would be reinstalling the base model cover and push down on the back of the top case. You'll hear it click into place. WAIT! You're NOT quite done yet. Inside the top case in the middle, there's a circular locking piece. Twist it to lock. It may be REALLY tight. You can loosen the nut on the bottom about a turn if you need to. Once that's locked in place. reinstall the passenger seat and test out the speakers and center mounted light.

I know you said you weren't interested in an aftermarket top case but there really isn't that much "fabricating" you need to do. I'm pretty mechanically challenged and I added the OEM LinQ base/rack (I don't know what it's called) and a Shad 58X top case. From start to finish, it probably took me an hour in a makeshift garage. You only have to drill (4) small holes in the LinQ thing and bolt it all together. (Plus you have to cut out a 3" hole in the middle so you can get to the circular locking thing.)

I have about $700 in my top case setup. Even at todays OEM top case price, I still have an extra grand for gas.

If I went with the shade box I need to get the RT LinQ Rack? It’s on sale for about 247 from 309 or so. Would I need anything else?

Thanks for the advice.

Yup. (4) nuts, bolts and washers. Plus some rubber spacers (1/4" should do it). You'll also need either a 3" hole saw or a Dremel to cut the center hole to access the circular lock on the LinQ rack. I think I've got a write up on site somewhere for this. If not, PM me and I'll send you some pics.

Just a 3" hole saw and normal garage/household tools (drill bit assortment, screwdrivers, cordless drill, etc.).

There are a variety of Shad top cases that you can chose from ranging in price from approx. $100 to $500.

As Monk stated, installing the LinQ adapter is very simple and straightforward. The "installation" is getting the Shad top case mounting bracket/plate fitted to the LinQ adapter which involves drilling 4-6 holes and using the supplied screws that come with the Shad top case.

I just put the budget 42 liter Shad top case ($99) on my base model RT and I don't see it ever coming off now that I have a few hundred miles on it. I use it to store my helmet and gloves when I am off the bike which is much easier that using the frunk. It looks pretty good too. I may get it painted to match the bike at some point. I have about $430 invested in it.

I have plenty of USB ports for charging elsewhere on the bike and I have added additional rear brake/turn/running lights on the back so the factory case was overkill for me and the cost was crazy high.

IMO...those top cases for both the RT and F3 are pretty cheesy. My F3L's came with them. I would not buy them separately.

Thank you for the replies. This gives me an affordable alternative to the OEM case. The idea of putting helmet and gloves is basically what I want to do. Plus, an occasional trip to the grocery store for more than just one or two items would be great. Any excuse to ride. I have the chalk white. What color version of the Shad case would look best? I have noticed they have options. I am horrible with "fashion" ;)

Anyhoo, Thanks for the comments. It really helps. I'm just a noob and like to see and hear what all of you veterans like to do.

I have the 2021 base model I bought last August. I bought the top case for it. It was easy to install. I did have to remove the passenger seat to remove the panel on the back but I think I could have taken it off without removing the seat. But as someone mentioned, it can easily break if you tug on it the wrong way. It does however go on easily enough.

The only thing I wished the top case had was an option for the side panels on the case to come in custom colors that match the bike. I just had a dealer look into those panels and they would cost me around $360 for both. So I guess I'll just try and get something from wrapnyspyder.com.

Ok folks. Not to keep beating this dead horse but I have a question on which would be the best one to get with the shad top box.

Carbon fiber “included”. I don’t know what included in parentheses means on the website but the carbon fiber is $438. The Black gloss is $514. The White is $514. The Silver is $514. This is buying direct from shade. I have the chalk white RT. Which one would you get?

I might add that starting tomorrow through the weekend they have 10% off the website.

Again, thank you for your input.

I think that you might be able to buy some particular Shad top cases with or without a colorized top panel. I looked on Amazon and I see some with and some without a top panel.

I would think that black would be OK since there is a lot of black on our bikes and if they offer a white it would be highly unlikely that it would match the BRP white - but you could get lucky. Pretty sure the factory BRP top case is black too.

My Shad top case is the el cheapo basic flat black model but it happens to match the flat black plastic on my RT very closely. I may decide to get it painted to match the blue bits but then again I may not......

Does anyone have a link to these cases that are on sale? It might be worth it for me to pick up one since I can get a rack to mount it to my F3T and my BMW 1600B.

If you just want to try it before you splurge on the more expensive Shad top cases, take a look at this one or $99 on eBay.

It's the one that I bought and mine came with the mounting plate. It was brand new, sealed box.

Now that I have had it on the bike for almost 500 miles, I really like it and I doubt that I will ever remove it because it is too darn handy to store my helmet and it weighs practically nothing empty.

BTW, I had a K1600B before moving to the Spyder RT. I wanted a top case for the B and wound up fabricating my own rack to accept the OEM BMW top case. I sold everything last fall or I would have it now to offer to you but I see that you can now buy a rack that might work for you from the K1600 forum - I think it is sold by a guy named TANNER (Just type TANNER RACK in the K1600 forum search box). You easily could put the SHAD plate on top of the Tanner rack and move the SHAD top case from RT to B. I think that SHAD even makes some of the BMW panniers and top cases for some models. I had an F800GT and the factory panniers had SHAD clearly stamped inside them. That K1600 forum has a great bunch of guys too - if you even need help with your B.
