RT throttle not returning properly - Spring issue - my fix!

FYI, in case you have issues with the throttle hand grip it may be a spring problem. I just replaced the start button on my 2014 RT, https://www.spyderlovers.com/forums...my-2014-RT-saved-me-500&p=1642979#post1642979. When I was putting the switch module back together I noticed the throttle did not readily return to full idle position. After checking things out, and reviewing the service manual, I came to the conclusion that the coil torsion spring at the end of the handlebar inside the grip was not engaging the hand grip properly. The end that fits into a hole in the grip was not engaging the grip.

To fix it I took the spring and clamped one end in a vise. Using vise-grips I stretched the spring maybe a quarter inch. Putting it back together the end of the spring went into the hole in the grip and now it returns the grip to full idle position very smoothly.

I have no idea why the spring was too short to properly engage the grip and the end of the bar of the handlebar, but now that it is longer all works well.

Thanks for the update on the return spring.
I'm about to start work on a helmet lock and needed to understand the mechanics of the throttle return.

Idaho is the spring return a problem that recently developed or has your Spyder always had this problem? BTW thank you for the great how to on fixing the starter button issue. One of my local Spyder friends is having a similar problem.

Good question. I really don't know. All I know for certain is when I had the switch module removed the grip moved inward about 1/4". Then when I turned the grip I heard a scratching or ratcheting sound and felt some resistance to its turning. So I think what happened is the end of the spring pulled out of the hole in the grip and was rubbing on the "ledge" inside the grip. The interior of the grip is about 3/4" diameter for about 2/3 its length, and about 3/8" for the other third. The hole for the spring end, which is bent 90° to the end coil, goes into the hole. The bore through the grip is stepped. The outer end of the spring has the end 1/4" or so of the end coil turned toward the center of the spring. That fits into a slot in the end of the bar of the handlebar and is pushed in by the screw that holds the end cap on.

There is another spring inside the part of the grip where the electronic sensor and electrical coil are. At least I think so since the grip did want to return home, but not very forcefully. All I can figure is the original configuration had the end of the spring poked into the hole only very little, so little I could not get it to stay in there while I put the end cap on.

Here are a couple of pics of the spring from an eBay listing.
