RT Shocks installed - video

UPDATE: 4-10-2011 - Took her for a quick spin Mad Maxx Style up and down some nearby roads. Seems much more responsive to steering input and seems like I can life one of the wheels far easier than before? Is this more common with the stiffer shocks and sway bar? I'll have to get used to the new feel.

Finally installed my RT shocks today (Thanks DocRiverside!). They only had 5000 miles on them from Doc's RT. I also installed the new sway bar.

I shot a cheesy video of the deal. Here are some things to consider if you are replacing your shocks with either the original OEM, RT, or 3rd party vendor.

- Bolts were corroded. Not terribly bad, but warranted a wire wheel to clean them up.

- Bolts are $1.95 and the elastic lock nuts are in the same ball park. You would need 4 of each to replace them all. I just ordered a set and will be replacing mine as the trunk will be off yet for a couple of weeks. Honestly, you should replace them to maintain the best locking capability that a new nut will give you. Peace of mind. I imagine many of you have used the same bolts and are just fine.

- Torque the bolts and nuts to required tightness. This is a bit confusing but I'm pretty sure the rear shock bolt is an M10 at a 10.9 grade. The front shocks bolts should be M10's but are an 8.8 grade. According to the Spyder manual, these front bolts should be torqued to 35 foot pounds and the rear should be 45 foot pounds. I made the mistake of assuming the fronts were also 10.9 grade and torqued to 45 or so pounds... which is another reason to get new bolts and nuts.

- Do not lube the bolts or the recess in the frame where the shocks are pinched between. Most lubes will degrade the plastic in the lock nut, and affect your torque spec when installing. It will also degrade the rubber/urethane bushing on the shock ends. Finally, any lube won't last as any water, and any detergents from washing the Spyder would flush it away anyway. I bring this up as the thought crossed my mind briefly before I came back to my senses. ;)

I left the shocks the way DocRiverside had them set... 2nd step down from stiffest.

I have not taken the Spyder out today to check out the ride. I'm hoping the dealer comes back with my estimate for the 12k (now 13k) service. I have done about half the 12k service stuff myself already and I want a clear picture of what they will charge for the reduced labor. I'd rather just ride it there tomorrow or Friday and let them work on it while I'm gone for the week.

Anyway... here is the video. I hope it helps people realize how easy a shock swap is. Ideally you would use an ATV lift, so no wise cracks on my Rube Goldberg set up.

Odd, my bike felt 'heavier' and more on the road with the RT shocks. I don't have the sway bar (yet), but I feel a major difference with the RT shocks...especially with tight turns at a fast speed...whereas the stock shocks would sway coming out of a turn, the RT shocks just stick as they don't compress as much in the first place...very nice!

I'm curious to see just how much more control the sway bar will provide...but for now, the RT shocks work just fine, and then some!

I need to get a new shield first....likely a Madstad...we'll see...still a few months before that decision is made...

Well.. It seems like she is riding on rails now, except that one wheel likes to come off(lift) the "tracks" much easier.

I'm sure that my riding it just to test it out made it seem all the more sensitive... When I get her back from her 12k check I'll take some of my normal long runs and see what happens.

Well, you might drop the shock setting down a bit...too much stiffness might lead to what you are experiencing...I keep mine at setting 4...

What setting are you using on the RT shocks?? Might it be that you have them set "too" stiff? The RS is lighter. Plus, with the sway bar, you have added stability.

I'll wait on getting different shocks after I see how the new sway bar improves things. But, RT shocks could be next mid season. Those, and maybe the comfort seat?? Oh, I could spend money like water!!!!

Hope you like the new feel of your Spyder. I will be watching for your additional reactions.

Are you using the 2010 RT shocks, or the 2011 RT shocks? Most agree that there is a big difference between the two.

Well, regardless of which you have, on the GS/RS, they both make a big difference...

I got mine done late last year, so I'm not sure which I have...however, they make a HUGE difference on my GS...

Yeah, tell me about it...I try not to even think about all I've put into this bike...it's a total money pit, but a fun one at that. I figured I was done once I got the RT shocks and R35 bags on...uh, not...now finishing up a 46L (or is it 47L) Givi rear trunk bag setup...

There's always something next...now need a Madstad or something like it...

so you are getting wheel lift on the inside tire? I did not run with just aftermarket shocks and now sway bar, got the bar first and I did not have this issue as far as fast cornering, I mean if you are at a light and you just bank it left or right you can pick the tire up, I have damn near full race penske's and last year I had semi race setup. I can tell you with the stiffer setup its a little more ruff but my exit speeds are 5-10 mph MORE on my public track up here and that is with the snow tire on.

I think at spyderfest there should be some spyder swapping so people can see the difference with spending 1800 bones on a shock/sway bar setup if it going to not matter to their personal riding style. I would love to test some elka's to see the difference.

great video btw, I just jacked up the center or where the A arms meet the frame, I am not going to tell you how I got the sway bar on because we did not take the trunk out.

Are those Clearwater Glenda driving lights showing in your video ?
Have you done a review or video on these?

Jack...

Those are Motolights http://www.motolight.com/

Default bulbs are 35 watt white... I've replaced them with 50 watt Yellow to stay 50 state road legal as I have the BRP fogs lights too... Can only have 4 forward facing high intensity lights in most states.

They really throw some light, and people don't me me day or night. Only downside is the combined 100 watt draw, but I really haven't had much issue with that. If I run them all day, I'll just shut them down in my final 10 to 20 minutes of riding and battery seems fine.

I caved. I'm getting the RT shocks installed on my Spyder while it is at the dealer for the DPS.

I was up at Freedom Cycle today to check on it. And that's when I just said, "Go ahead and put the RT shocks on it".

DPS came in today. They said I should have it by the end of this week.

I can't believe I missed the BRP Can Am Demo Days this past weekend!!!:gaah:

I did sit on an RT in the showroom. Man that beast is a BEAST!!!!! Comfy for sure!! But it felt too big for me. I'm just not a big person.

Hope to be on the road soon!!! :D

I have the 2010 RT shocks and springs on my 08 PE. I have to say I agree that it is much more responsive, almost "darty" ( I doubt that is a real word).
I have not noticed wheel lift being worse than before the shock switch however. I also have the Evo sway bar. I have ridden with it one up, two up and two up with a trailer. Love the difference.

Yeah, sat on one at my dealer some time ago too...too blocky for my taste but really a nice touring bike...

put my replacement penskes on, thanks for the quick reference torque spec's dan, Once I get my penskes back from them I will send these to Firefly to test in MI.
