New member
Thanks to all for the great info jgride hear new bee to spyderlovers. My rt ran worm on city streets being a welder i removed the catalitic converter, lost 35lbs rt runs cooler and beter excelaration more mods to come. Trying to get spyder club going in Boise Idaho sure could use some help:ani29:

Now having no mechanical expertise whatsoever...:opps:
What parts did you need to put in there to fill in the space that used to be the converter??
(A nice list of all of them would be VERY handy for Dummies like me!)

catalitic converter mod

Its not difficult but dos require a tig welder or mig welder. I removed the converter, cut the pipes off as close as you can so you are using the short pipes that already have the clamps to match back to the bike. I went to a auto muffler pipe supplyer and bought too feet of stainless muffler pipe and one 90degree elbow, the 90 will be used on the down pipe comming from the left side of the spyder. the pice you cut off the converter for the right side already has the elbo to continue back to muffler. Reinstall the muffler on the bike build a y to join the right side back to the left side, witch will at this point go stright back to the muffler with about 14 inch stright stainless pipe, keep in minde when building this crosover y pipe it all has to fit back on to the spyder with the pips and clamps off the converter. So i tack all my pips together before i weld and reclamp the hole assembly back on the spyder to make sure it fits. Hope this helps you, ive done three spyder so far and all is well. ps i wraped muffler wrap on the pips to help hold in heat, this im told will help the exhaust move through the pipe faster causing less back presure. This mod according to our local spyder teck is the best way to deduce back pressure and reduce overheating. I reuse the spyders muffler so thers no need to buy new mufflers witch cost a small fortun. If i can help furter let me know. jgride

catalitic converter removel

No the sound is richer a little depper but not louder, the next one i doo i will tape it. Im going to remove the stock muffler in a few weeks, cut off the end of it and take a look at the baffels. Ive been told if you remove some of the baffals you get a different sound but even less back pressure. My problem with new mufflers is the louder the sound is not nessarely giving you better engin exhust. If thers a spyder rider out there that knows more about exhust feel free to add to our blod. I called brp about the cat removel and in some states they doo the dreaded yearly test not yet in idaho. When i had brp on the line i checked for recalls there was too on my 2011RT-se5 limited, one the back brake spring the other throttle bode adjustment,it appears after time the bushings on the throttel ware and needs adjusting to close up the gap. I felt no differance in the throttle after they got done. The teck told me the delay in shifting ive complaind about was according to brp normal, and faterall its a cruser not a high speed bike. Teck said a juice box or other devices may help. Thanks guys lets keep it going jgride

I am thinking of doing what you just did. Have you noticed and popping, or back firing? Have you road it lone to tell if it has increased or decreased in gas mileage? I have a very free flowing muffler that did not make it louder, just deeper sound and I realize that the cat is keeping some of the sound down on mine but I dont want it to loud or sound like a pissed off bumblebee. My muffler is not even a bike muffler...

Well like I said I would, I took cat off and cut the ends off last night. going to get me some pipe today and try to get it back together. No turning back now. My wife came out while I was cutting the cat up with chop-saw. My butt still hurts from that a$$ chewing! :yikes: I will post back when all done to let you know what I think.

I know a Spyderlovers member that cut off the front and the back of stock exhaust and completely removed everything from inside, according to him, the stock and it did not change the sound a bit. We ran it next to mine which is stock and it was hard to tell a difference.

May not be worth the effort.

just a thought regarding the CAT

Why couldn't, or would it be worth while to just cut a hole in the bottom of the CAT, knock all the stuffing out, and weld the hole back in. I am concerned, because here on the left coast, they are talking about visual smog inspections. If the CAT is gone, it could make for a big expensive problem. If it LOOKS like it is still there, maybe no issue.

I did it with my pick up, and it seemed to help the back pressure a bit, but it still looks stock. Also, this may help with the Spyder "hot foot", without changing the stock look???

Just a thought...

Cat removel

I talked to local teck and he said, buy only removing the guts on the cat may create exhust overheating and posably burn your valves. The faster the exhust leaves, the least amount heat is generated, and least amount of back pressure. My son has a mustang with 589 horspower on the nyno it looked realy good after instaling short pipps an then dynoing it was fantastic . Thats why there is a arow exhust turbin ready for the spyder if you can afford its only $3000.oo.. When you build the crosover to replace the cat thers plenty of room to make the y pipe long and gradual to avoid slowing down the exhust.

I just drilled [reamed] though the two exhaust ends with a long drill bit on an extension, Right though the baffles and Cat, The results was a hair better sound, less heat, My MPGs were 33 town, 35/37 highway.
08 GS Sm5, What the mpgs were before i can't remember i did it over 3 years ago.
Every thing else was stock, performance wise.

You all know what I am going to say--:roflblack:

I don't think that is legal and may cause some problems when you try to sell the machine.

Enough said. :popcorn::popcorn:

OK, Got got her all welded back up this weekend and What a deference it made. sound? A very deep tone with the muffler I am running. And now for the road, She will break the tire lose on pavement at take off "with out" feathering the clutch! Guys and Gales, with out having a dyno, I could not tell you how much I have gained but by the seat of the pants I can feel a deference. These things are chocked down. Now I want a PCv with auto tune and make a big air kit.
