There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. RT Reverse

I have a 2012 RT SM5 with 300 miles on it and recently have been having trouble with reverse. I attempted to back out of my garage and up my driveway which is on a slight downgrade and I wasn't able to get the engine above 3200 RPM's causing me to stall. It was not a case of not enough clutch/gas. Everytime I attempted to open up the throttle it would sputter at 3200 RPM's and stall when I released the clutch. The transmission does shift into reverse and the vehicle starts to back up but I can't get the engine to accelerate enough to move backwards. I called the dealer and was told that there is a rev limiter on the reverse gear. This is definately not a rev limiter issue. Has anyone else had this issue? I can't get to the dealer until next week. Any suggestions?

I recently posted the same issue and was informed that it is a rev limiter and is in place for safety related issues. That information not only came from my dealer but aslo from BRP. The limiter only engages in reverse.

Your dealer is correct. The rev limit is very low in reverse. The Spyder should be capable of about 15 mph in reverse, which should be enough for anybody. Learn to slip the clutch more and rev less. :)

I understand the need for a rev limiter but I never had that issue previously. I've been riding motorcycles for 30 years and this is the first time I've ever felt this issue. I can't even get up to 15 miles an hour. I even tried reverse on level ground and the engine just sputters.

It will sputter (on the rev limiter) if the rpm is above the rev limit, which should be somewhere around 3000-3500 rpm, as I recall. If it is different than it was before, the dealer should look at it rather than discuss it on the phone.

Yup the rev limiter will make it sputter for sure. However it sounds like your rev limiter is kicking in to early perhaps? The fact in your first post that you said "I can't get the engine to accelerate enough to move backwards" seems to imply something is not acting properly. IMHO you are on the right track, the dealer needs to take a look at it.

reverse issue

I have had this happen a few times. It comes and goes. It feels like the rev limiter is kicking in at very low RPM's. I have an appt for this and some other issues Friday, if I get any answers I will post.

Sometimes the simple is to easy. We had that issue in the beggining with our Spyder. Electric parking brake. whataduffuss:yikes:

Thanks everyone for the input. I have an appointment with dealer on Monday. I'll post results afterwards. Expect the worst, hope for the best.

Got a call from the dealer today. Service manager said the vehicle was checked with no problems. The issue I had was the rev limiter kicking in. He did experience what I was talking about but said there were no problems. The only thing they did do was bleed the clutch and that seemed to make backing up a little easier without stalling. I haven't had the chance to pick it up yet to check it myself because of the storms here but I trust that the issue was really a non mechanical issue and just rider error.
