RT Fender Reflectors

During shipment one of the front front fenders got scratched and the dealer ordered a replacement. Unfortunately, the reflectors didn't come with the new fender for some reason, so the dealer had to order those. Does anybody know if the parts catalog shows those--the fender and the reflectors--as two seperate items? Seems odd that it would.

They are separate. This does not seem strange at all. Why should you have to buy an entire fender just to replace a damaged reflector. My preference is always to buy pieces, rather than assemblies. Lots of parts to a fender assembly.

Get a credit from the dealer and buy the Mud Flap Reflectors from ESI.

Reflectors

The front and back reflectors are the same size and shape on the RT and the front is Amber (705002423) and the back is red (705003412).

Ordered a set of each last week to turn into LED lights.

Yeah, now that I think about it you're probably right, although they're stick on types, which makes me wonder why the dealer didn't pull off the one on the scratched fender and apply it to the new fender....

Reflectors don't always come off in one piece

I have been taking them off for a few years on BMW K1200LTs and I have to use dental picks, denatured alcohol and a lot of patience because the double sided tape can be very tough to separate.

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing...maybe because it's a warranty deal has something to do with it...like somebody said, that might make too much sense...

I agree, they are a bear to get off without damaging them. Then you have to get the correct adhesive to re-adhere them. No thanks!

tape not glue

It is a tape but as it gets heated over time it changes structure on the surface and adheres and the middle still is flexible.

I have way to much knowledge about the middle of a piece of double stick tape - I need a life. :shocked: I need a new RT:gaah:

Yes, I should have specified that it was an adhesive tape. Thanks for clarifying this. Problem is that it is not as thick as standard weatherstrip tape, and it is far stickier than standard double stick tape, even the "permanent" kind. It is weatherproof, too. Tough to come by, at least for the non-professional, around here. I might also add that it is easy to damage the flexible reflector when removing it if it bends too much.

An autobody supply shop should have the right tape. Made by 3M and you can use it for all kinds of stick-ons like name plates reflectors, body side mouldings etc.

I have the 3M tape, and it is much thicker than the stuff on the reflectors. Do you have a 3M part number for a thinner version?

Here's a link, looks like thicknesses range from 30-90 mil.

The roll I have is about .040 in.....not really sure what that is in mils?

edit: searched mils equals thousandths of an inch.

The thinnest stuff I have is the 45 mil (0.045") too. I also have 90 mil. Even 30 mil seems thicker than I remember the stuff on the back of the reflectors to be. They probably applied an adhesive to the back of the reflectors during manufacture. I imagine the 30 mil stuff (or thicker) would work, but it will still be a bit thicker than the original.
