RT-622 trailer Dust Caps and Bearings

Getting my RT-622 trailer ready for Durango. First thing I started to check was the Wheel Bearings. Dust cap was almost impossible to remove and was wandering why the 3/4 inch removable grommet on the outside was there. Almost like an access for a bearing buddy? The Cap is stamped with the name KNOTT. Called the factory (BRP) and now one had any information for me. Only to contact a dealer. Did so and no one there knew either. Not sure if this is OEM or AM. Cap was full of gold colored grease. No grease zerk inside. Surely you do not just remove the grommet and fill the cavity with grease. How would it get to the bearing? Will remove bearings and repack tomorrow.

Bought the trailer used and have no history on it. BRP said service bulletin 2013-4 (ground harness) had been done and service bulletin 2012-14 did not apply.

Any thoughts with someone with more trailer experience on the
RT-622.

in the parts manual it looks like they are a sealed hub assembly

Sealed Hub, what would this indicate? You would still have to repack the bearings as needed--correct? Or do you keep the cavity inside the cap full of grease through the grommet. I believe this to be the second generation wheel hub assembly after the service bulletin. Would that be correct. Knott is an English company that manufactures complete hub assemblies.

Thanks, have not seen a set up such as this before with the rubber grommet centered on the dust cap.

The RT622 owner's manual shows to pack bearings and gives an interval.

You are correct but it just looked suspicious with the strange rubber grommet on the end of the dust cap. The dust cap was sealed to the hub with a light coat of shellac and the dust cover was extremely hard to remove.

Mine must have never been apart as I bought used (2012) I like the gold colored grease that was in there. I wonder how I can get some. I think this same thing was used on Choppers so it must be good.

Trailer wheel bearings

Remove, wash in solvent, repack with grease (gold or regular) and replace. The inner seal needs a bit of finesse to put back on, but just tap it in lightly. When tightening the nut, just go until there is no end play. Tap the clean dust cap back on. Do other side. If you put the whole thing on the jack stands, it is much easier! Call if you need help.

Thanks Joe. I have repacked a lot of boat and trailer bearings before but the dust cap with the rubber grommet had me a bit confused and I wondered if I needed to do it a different way. I am tempted to put bearing buddies on. What is your thoughts? I have used them on numerous trailers I have owned with good luck.
Tell Ann hello and we will see you in Durango! Thanks

Had a trailer for a pair of seadoos one time and the trailer had caps like that. You removed the rubber groumet and there was a grease fitting on the end of the shaft that you pumped grease into that force the water and contaminated grease out the front. Worked good for a boat trailer that goes into the water.

At first that's what I thought it was but could find no zerk fitting inside. Any way I am going to take it all apart, clean it up, repack and put a couple of latter generation Bearing Buddys on.

Well so much for the Bearing Buddies. They stick out about 1/4 inch to far and will not allow the small BRP Logo plastic center wheel insert to remain. Looks a little cheesie with the Bearing Buddies sticking out and the plastic center insert gone. Packed the bearings the old way and took the "buddies" back.
