rough paint and windshield

I was cleaning my spyder in the manual car wash (place is closed down) by spraying into a bucket and using a mitt to rub it down and rinse with soft rinse and drive it dry. The result is I have not had much reason to feel the surface of the paint (BTW bought used) and the other day I was trying hand cleaning without water and I found that the surface feels quite rough and on close examination it appears pitted. I kind of feel compound would be too strong. What has anyone tried with success to smooth the surface of their spyder?

Try clay, just like on a car finish. Follow immediately with wax or polish. No compound.
