There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Right Brake Lever Addition!

I just picked up my Spyder however I miss my right brake lever desperately. Maybe I'm from old school but I like a separate brake system as a backup just in case the unexpected happens.

I'm now researching adding a hydraulic brake lever and hooking it to the emergency brake lever/ mechanism. Since the front brakes have to work in perfect harmony to prevent right and left pull, the rear brake would be the easiest to deal with.

I did see one great brake mod from the user Lamonster using a cable to the foot pedal however this would not provide a separate brake system. In addition, I could weave the hydraulic line anywhere needed and not have to worry about binding.

Has anyone researched this theory before to save me some time?

One person added front calipers. Although it looked cool, the results are that you'll override the ABS. Not a smart idea. Eaxample, you're driving in a light rain and it gets worse. You find the need to brake hard and you use both foot and hand brake. The ABS would pevent locking the brakes, but the added calipers would override that and you could lock up the front wheels.:(

In that same light, (using the emergency brake), if you're on wet pavement, and you only activate the hand brake (rear wheel), you'd most likely affect the traction control system, if not the stability ststem, and I wouldn't want to lock up the rear wheel only, ever.:(

Lamonts add is a good one. It ads to the ABS system, not alters it. You can activate the brakes by 2 methods, resulting in the same action.

Another person added the slave cylinder behind the master cylinder at the brake. Either one serves the same purpose.

Have not seen a reliable way to use the emergency brake system as an add to the foot brake.

Good luck.

Your Spyder already has separate front and rear braking systems. It has a dual master cylinder similar to automotive systems, not to mention ABS, VSS etc.

There exists calipers that allow dual separate inputs. So instead of adding two new calipers, you could probably swap out the existing calipers for the dual input calipers. Then maybe you could keep the current brake setup, as well as have the added front hand lever brakes. Just a thought, not sure it would work. Example: check out the Honda ST1300 rear caliper. That bike uses a linked brake system.

Hey thanks for the comments – my intention was not to use this brake as an everyday service brake, like most, I like having the security of a hand brake, just the other day I was pushing the bike in the garage and as I thought I was going to clear an obstacle, I reached for the brake and it wasn’t there, keep in mind, I’m on the left side so there is no way I’m going to reach the foot brake.

I never planned the hand brake on the front wheels because any irregularities would cause it to pull to the right or left or affect the ABS qualities of the system. Regardless, I’m not messing with the front wheels for a number of reasons.

If the emergency brake mechanism won’t work, I’ll have to look into adding another caliper or T’ing off the existing hydraulic line for just the rear brake.
