Riding two up.

Quick question!

Do those of you who ride two up also deal with the passengers weight when stopping or slowing down being unbearable?

Not sure if my wife is not holding the grips and stabilizing herself.... But when I do stop, all of her weight shifts into my back.

Thoughts?

This is more tongue in cheek...but either she's not paying attention or you're stopping too abruptly.

Seriously, I'm not sure why that would happen. I've never had that problem with my wife on the back, either on the Spyder or two wheelers I've owned.

One option...

Do you still have the original seat on your bike? I bought a Corbin seat which has the separate driver and passenger seats. You have the option of having a backrest on either or both. My driver seat has a backrest so I could have some back support. This also keeps my wife from sliding forward or even leaning forward when I stop fast.

Just maybe she is trying to get your attention. :roflblack:

I find by me having to slow down ( braking ) quickly my passenger does lean forward. Especially if I brake hard and without notice.

I do feel it side to side when she moves around back there, but to answer your question I have only experienced helmet knock when stopping a little to quicky.

That........ and an occasional kidney punch when my immaturity shines through. That is not my fault though, I tell her it's a chemical imbalance and I was born that way. :roflblack:

Well, I'm on an RT so this probably won't help too much, but, my wife and I have ridden 2-up since we got this. I've never had a time where she moved into my back when I was up front (same for me if she was in the saddle). We of course have the backrest and always press back into it when riding (and we're pretty much always gripping the bars). Whomever is passenger for us is always actively riding--holding grips, sitting back, pressing on the foot rests and anticipating the stop by scanning ahead for what the ryder is going to encounter. That and I slow down way more gradually than I do in my Jeep since I don't get that extra restraint of seat belts on the spyder. I'm sure people behind me get pissed because in my area they love to race you to the stoplight and jam on the brakes when you're in a car :roflblack:

I'd think for a GS/RS that didn't have a backrest, you'd have a harder time not moving forward when braking what with physics and all.

Abrupt stops the answer is always yes, after you and her are used to riding and know whats up. Shouldnt happen.

Like Randy my 2-up constantly is giving me nudges and hand gestures, but they are all self inflicted from activities I perform that are less than intelligent on the bike.

There's an expensive; but effective solution!
You might want to gently point out that effective use of those grab bars will keep her from hitting you during quick stops...
Not that you mind her being close to you; of course! :2thumbs:

I had a passenger on Saturday for a poker run and I swear that I will never have another. I couldn't sit straight up or I would hit his helmet. He asked if he should hold onto me and I said no use the grab bars. Well he was okay until the last run which was the longest and all expressway with high wind and lightning. I thought sissy boy was going to make a mess in his big boy pants! He grabbed me and didn't let go. He said the wind noise in his helmet freaked him out.

X2 on the kidney punch. Resolved all the issues getting my own :spyder2:

As mentioned above, there are a lot of issues that can cause the problems mentioned by the posters above. Size, weight, and passenger inattention to what is happening during the ride are probably the biggest causes.

Instructions to passenger about use of the grab rails and positioning feet on the floorboards (not the brake pedal if you have an RS) are also suggestions.

A driver backrest is also a good separator for driver passenger. I have had Corbin seats with driver backrest on two of my :spyder2:'s.

It is the inertia and the weight of the backseat rider. It will be very dangerous if you need to brake quickly.

Its man thing, I've been riding a long time, but if I was a pillion ridding with a lady, stuff the grab bars I'm holding on. I'm at that age, if that is the only way I can get a hug, go fo it.:roflblack:

Wind noise in my helmet freaked me out, going to have to remember that one,

:agree: You've got to go with what works! :roflblack:

Sometimes a real quick start will have them hugging you tightly also... (Or you'll get a swat to the noggin'!)

I have to glance back from time to time to make sure me wife hasn't actually gotten off....I never feel any movement or anything from her. Oh, maybe the ocassional nudge if there is a gendarme hiding up ahead....that's about it.

Altho, @ 5'3" 125# her weight doesn't really have the 'muscle' to overcome my 'bulk'! :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

SpyderAnn01 Male logic

Spyder Ann, I thought a diagram of Male logic for poker runs would help. :roflblack:

Normal stops with a passenger who is holding the passenger grips and paying attention won't usually cause the passenger to slide into the rider. But in an emergency stop, short of a rider backrest, I don't know how a passenger could keep from sliding into the rider. The few times I've had to jump on the brakes really hard on the RT caused my wife to scoot up against me but not so hard that it was any problem. The BMW I was riding before we got the Spyder had really, really good brakes and there were a couple of times on it that my wife had me all the way up on the tank. Just the laws of physics, not much to be done about it.
