I have to have a total shoulder replacement this spring or summer. Has anyone had this done and are still able to ride? I have found that the Spyder needs a little more upper body strength to ride than my bike. If you can ride after surgery, how long do you have to wait?

This sounds like a question you need to ask your doctor. I'm sure every person has a different recoup time regarding that surgery. I had a total knee replaced this past March and I was off work for 3 months but was able to ride my Spyder after 2 months. Good luck with your surgery.

18 years and counting

had complete right shoulder replacement 18 years ago and have ridden just about ever since Feel more comfortable and somewhat safer riding the spyder than I did riding the 2 wheelers...Honda Silverwing ,Aprillia Mana 850 and a Yamaha fjr1300ae...I wouldn't go back to 2 wheels as long as I am able to buy 3...I was 30 when I had mine done now I am 48...Age has a lot to do with recovery we all can't do what we did when we were 20 or 30...it's a lot of mind over matter...IF YOU DON'T HAVE A MIND IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER...I do worry that if and or when I have it done again I won't have the mobility I have now...But I will find a way to ride once more...

In a lot of cases, mind over matter helps a lot. We do wish you the best of luck and hope this will just be a bump in the road.

Have to agree..!!

:agree: with comments above..had back surgery with now limited use of right foot but was back ryding within a month. Wish you the best and a speedy recovery..

I can't speak to complete shoulder replacement, but I can when it comes to two severed tendons in my right rotator cuff. As a general rule riding the spyder will not aggravate or bother your shoulder. There are times though that I get a tad bit tender up there after riding my spyder. I think I experience it more on windy days.

I had a complete shoulder replacement . . . .

. . . a couple years ago. I am left handed, they replaced the right. The surgery went great. One night in the hospital. I was driving ( with a sling ) 4 days after getting home. Rode my Spyder to PE at the end of the week after that - carefully!

Everybody is different, I was told my recovery was exceptional. I did EVERYTHING they told me to do at home and just that - no pushing the shoulder's limits. I know a guy who decided to do some extra work with weights and ended up going back into surgery. A neighbor found the PT too hard and just kind of gave up - there is a lot that they can't do now.

As far as the Spyder went, it felt great - it felt like a part of PT. It didn't stress the shoulder or call for any unusual range of motion. And, I stress that I was careful and the rides were easy and casual. I found that I steered with a lot more pushing and pulling with my good arm at first, but as the strength came back, my right arm does it's full part now. The throttle was no problem whatsoever.

Post surgery, there are some things that are not easy and some motions are still weak, for example, I don't ever plan on doing anymore rock climbing and to this day, swimming still feels awkward. Other than the rock climbing, I do everything I used to. Nobody watching me can tell I ever had the surgery done - but I can tell.

For reference, I was 64 when I had the surgery and in good shape - except for the cartilage being worn out in my shoulder. Please don't think that it is a walk in the park, it is serious surgery and recovery/PT is a real job - very hard, but very important.

Good luck with your surgery and I hope you do at least as well as I did.

In 2012 I had my left shoulder replaced. Rode after eight weeks. August 2013 had accident and broke pelvis. Rode to Spyderfest 2014 from Maine by myself. Last fall had right shoulder replaced. After three weeks fell and broke 4 ribs. Can't wait for snow to go away so I can ride. All I can say is It depends on how much you want to ride. Right now I plan on being in Springfield for Spyderfest 2015.

Dont know about replacement but have dislocated both, 1 normal 1horribly backwards under my shoulder blade. 6months or so of therapy later i do fine it will POP loud enough it echoes the room but G'luck to ya
