There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Relay Question...

Will you be trying the new relays before you have a stock one fail? For that price I may give them a shot.

Who said they're all going to fail? I got some spares from Parry Performance...they were I think 9.00 each...OEM. I wouldn't change anything until it goes bad...just make sure you have an extra on hand...

I don't see why many think the stock relays are faulty...then again, mine haven't failed yet so maybe that's why I think they're fine! :D

Large Relay - for sale

For those who may be interested in the large relay. See for sale postings. I have a few OEM Tyco Relays left for sale VF28-11F14-S01. $10 each + priority mail shipping $15 total, $16 with delivery confirmation.

Who said I thought the original ones were faulty. When I said to try one, I meant to just replace the original temporarily to just see if the new ones will work. What's the problem with doing that?

I'll give them a try when they come. I received an email about 2 hours after ordering sayin they've been shipped. I'll keep ya posted. If they work, definately worth having for a breakdown situation.

OOOPsss...sorry...thought you meant to replace the original with new ones...not only for testing, but just to 'head off' any problems...

09 and 08 relays

My 08 SM5 is running two different relays 3 small tycos and a larger tyco.

The 09 SE5 has the same type relay in all four positions... as does the picture in this thread.

After a little research I find the large tyco crosses to a R3109 and the small tyco crosses to a R3110. The R3110 is a 30/20. The R3109 is a direct substitute in both the Borg W cross and in the master Pro cross.

I posted this a while ago in another thread:

"I found equivalent relays from Song Chuan Relays

Main: TYCO VF28-15F14-S01 is identical to Song Chuan 898H-1CH-C-R1-U03-12VDC

Other three relays: TYCO VJ28-95F24-S01 is identical to Song Chuan 301-1C-C-R1-U01-12VDC"

These relays are easily accesible in the internet and very cheap, for those of you that are having a hard time getting relays or are being extorted.

They are Chinese but, if they save you from getting stranded, they may as well be North Korean.

I just ordered all for of these relays from mouser electronice www.mouser.com for like a total of $14 (thats for all 4) recieved them in about 3 days. I swapped them all out with the original factory relays and went for a ride. No problems at all, everything worked correctly. I then replaced the factory relays and will keep the new ones as spares in trunk. Very cheap peace of mind.

Bones- "I'm a Doctor DAMMIT, not a mechanic!"

Ok, I'll bite on the newby question- Why does one need to be swapping out these relays?

You don't need to swap out your relays.

It's good to have a couple on hand just in case one goes. Some of the earlier ones may not last as long as one would think so getting replacements is a good idea.

I don't have any issues but I got a couple extra just in case...same with the fuses...good to have...hope never have need to...

Same as what Bone Crusher says, you don't have to swap out the relays. But, there have been instances of relays failing and it just makes sense to have a spare relay to swap out with a suspected bad one if you're out on the road. For instance, if your fan relay fails 100 miles from home and your Spyder overheats, you could easily replace the relay with your spare and continue riding. Without a spare relay, you're stuck trying to find one at a auto parts store or finding a Spyder dealer while keeping the Spyder temp down by only riding a short while then shutting it off to cool down. Or you could rotate the headlight relay to the fan position but then you won't have functioning headlights, no big deal in the daylight but not feasible in the dark.

I was having problems on the way to LA, a 1300 mi trip each way. Check engine light came on,a few other weird quirks with the instruments, and finally ,on the way back,(thankfully, in the parking lot of a dealer) LIMP MODE.

Dealer cleared the computer, I guess. Then a few days later, just before a 4th of July kiddee parade I was ryding in, limp mode once again.

I took the three smaller stock relays and pitched 'em in the nearest dumpster and replaced them with ones cross referenced over from Lamonts recommendations.

Not a single problem since.

Good to know, but please notice as NancysToy said (post #9):

"Please realize that the Duralast relays are not rated for the same amperage as the original, BRPs made by Tyco. They should certainly work as emergency replacements, but may fail in time."

The Song Chuan Relays have IDENTICAL specs to the original TYCOs

3WD

True that the Duralasts may fail in time but the stock Tyco's are failing too. Not sure I see what the difference is. :dontknow:

From what I recall when I went through the wiring diagrams and totaled up the current flowing through all the relays, there was ample headroom for even the 20 amp relays to work in the circuits without being a safety concern. Here's my post on the relay vs. wiring diagrams.

I may break open one of the stock relays and one of the aftermarket relays (if I feel I have an extra $20 to throw away) and see if I can notice a difference in there that would make the 20 amp rated relays a bad move.

ps. At the price of those Mouser relays you found, I may order a handful just to have around and tear one apart to see what the chinese quality is like compared to whoever makes the Tycos or the Duralasts.

That didn't include shipping, did it? I just ordered today (all 4) and shipping was another $7.

Thank you both- My problem is that I can never tell that the darn fan is on- I can't hear it, see it, whatever. My dealer tells me it works and even recorded the temps where it kicked in and out. Nonetheless, you can't replace a relay if you don't know its gone bad!

....I don't think one gets old over time. I just think you wake up, look in the mirror and think, 'Who the heck is that!?!"
