• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

regular or premium?

I used regular by mistake once and noticed the engine knocking while it was still cold. Ill spend the extra $ for the best fuel. I noticed that Shell premium now has Nitro in it. Hmm...

89 No eth in all my toys. Ethanol is the devil :) Our price difference to go 91 no eth isnt worth it. 89 no eth is currently 2.96, 91 is 4.25.

Purrs like a kitten with the Shell premium. That is my fuel of choice at the moment.

Noticed a difference right away. Idle rpms dropped from 900 to 800 and the engine sounds like its purring! Will try the 100 next. :)

Use what is recommended in the manual.....just dont think that you can keep going higher in octane and get better performance or a better running engine. That may not be the case and you make actually damage something !

2 aspirin work, 3 made me feel better, 4 made me feel great....well 8 will surely work even better. This philosophy can be dangerous. :yikes::yikes::thumbup:

Wife and I just put 3500 miles on the 14 RT (then traded it in for an F3) It drank nothing but Premium the whole way. I wouldn't dream of filling up the tank with anything less.

I love this site. If you want to see people get into a pissing match about fuel or motor oil, this is the place to be.

Funny thing is... I have never seen anyone look over as someone else is pumping gas into their tank and tell them they are doing it wrong. On an online forum everyone stands their ground and defends their anonymous opinion.

Yet two riders of the exact same bike will say nothing of the choices made when they are 20 feet away from each other at a gas pump.

Perhaps you might want to read the title of the thread, again. The original poster asked what to use. Should we have discussed the weather in response to the question?

As for anonymous? Read my signature . . . my name is there for all to see.

To throw a little gas on the fire...

After reading all the posts on gasoline octane, I decided to try an experiment with myself as the lab rat. I had been running 91 no ethanol for the last 7500 miles. (Disclaimer: except for 1 tank out in the middle of nowhere because I wasn't paying attention.). Recently I did 2 tanks at 93 octane. MPG went from just over 37 to just over 39. Driving pattern is round trip to work (42 miles) and back at 95% highway and stop-n-go in the afternoon going home. Am now on my 1st tank of 101 with 1 tank to go for the test. Truly, it's not really worth the $4 per gallon price differential over 91 octane, but I am performing an experiment. Spyder has been consistantly showing 70-73 farenheit in the mornings and 102-104 in the afternoon.

Now on my Mini-Cooper S each 2 octane is about 2 mpg on the tankful. Non-ethanol adds 2 more. so, for the 125,000 miles on my mini... 91 octane 100% gas gives 34 mpg and I drive like a bat out of you know where. 87 octane with ethanol lowers it to 25-26. and the punch isnt there if I stomp the noise pedal.

However to each his own. I dont use the Eco mode either! :)

UPDATE: $8.49 for the 101 no change over the 93 octane at $ 4.00 per gal.

I try to run 92-93 whenever I fill up. I have had to use 87 due to that's all that was available. But i have noticed when I use higher octane I gain 2-3 miles per gallon. But on the flip side, i ran non-ethanol 87 before and had the same mileage as the higher octane.

I also ride 2-up for a majority of rides and higher octane does seem to make the bike run alot better. Since the computer will advance the timing with higher octane, it's a little more peppy and feels like it just wants to GO! With 87, feels real sluggish. Just doesn't have the pep.

REALLY !!!!!!!

:yikes:....This is startling news ....I have a 2014 RT SE and ONLY use 87 octane ......and average 39 MPG !.......If you only get 25-26 something is wrong with the computer in your Spyder...........According to Bob D's manual, have it TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER IMMEDIATELY .........Mike :roflblack:

Yes, the 25-26 was for my Mini Cooper-S Not the Spyder. Worst I have ever gotten on my Spyder was 33. That was riding wet and windy most of the tank and 2-up for about half the tank.

I think I will stick with the 93 where possible and 91 everywhere else. :)

What year is your "S"?
My Missus has a 2012... only it's the 118 horsepower one
