Reda Gas Can Pressure buildup?

I have been carrying two Reda cans in my side saddle for a while now. Have not had any leaks or smells, etc.. so have been happy. Today for the first time since starting to carry them, after a couple hour ride in the warm weather, I decided it was time to use the fuel inside them to keep it from getting stale, etc..

I was surprised and a bit concerned when I pulled them out of my side saddle because the felt slightly bulging (but not overly) and then when I opened them there was a very high amount of pressure build up released. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

IF they are not venting then it makes sense they will build up some pressure. They appear to be working as designed.

Mine did this first couple of fills.
Then the seal deteriorated to the point of not working properly after second use of gas and third refill.
Have yet to call Reda about the seal, I heard some had bad (defective) spout seals in the past.

This thread reminded me to contact Reda about this issue, sent them an email, already got a reply (on a saturday evening)... a replacement spout and seal is being sent no charge from Reda.

+1 to Reda Innovations for customer support!!

Was it cooler out when you filled them?

Yes, a few months ago when filled it would of been in the 50/60s, today I rode in the high 80s low 90s. I guess when filling them on cooler weather I should open and vent them maybe when weather warms? If thats the issue the I would guess all summer I,should not have a lot of pressure since they are now sealed at high 80s temps?

I also guess when I ride to smokeys next month the high altitudes vs our 400 ft above sea level will cause some pressure build up also?

Glad they seal so tight so no fumes in side saddle but just alarmed me with the amount of pressure. I guess they are built to handle it?

It is normal. That is why they have such heavy walls, so they can withstand the pressure. I would suggest two things to keep the bulging to a minimum. First, leave about an inch of head space in the tank when filling. I put 0.9 gallons in my 1.0 gallon cans. Second, open slightly to relieve the pressure if the weather turns hot, then tighten the cap again.

Reda vs ??

I always carry a Reda (just in case)..but when visiting Blueknight911 he showed me his inexpensive, super airtight answer to that emergency fuel. Small takes very little room...looks like a winner idea to me!!! Reda will get me back to WA...but then goin' change my ways in the reserve fuel department...takes less room...there I can put another pair of shoes in the space Reda now takes up!!!!:clap:

:agree: Very wise advice!

I'm no fan of the reda since mine leaked and caused a not so fun smelly situation-----

They did offer me a new can for free and said they had some manufacturing problems with the seals/caps. Told them thanks but no thanks----no way would I trust the product again.

so....
