• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

rear wheel brake wear

what is the concensus on how long the rear brakes typically last, yes I understand diff. driving styles come into play. I don't feel I use a lot of brake and im very conscious not to ride it due to stories I've heard with the nanny stepping in. but I was surprised to take my2012 rt-s in for sevice at 800miles to hear the rear brakes were getting low then tech said typically once year ,is this uncommon or the norm

brakes

I have 13,000 on my 2011 RT LImited and the brakes are still good. either there is something else wrong or dealer trying to get money.

14,000 miles on my GS, and I just changed the rear pads. They still had a lot of meat on them though, could've waited till next year. The fronts had only worn 1mm.

Don't let your tech pull the wool over your eyes. Spyder brake pads are thin to begin with, so they can't just be eyeballed. They appear to be worn out when brand new, compared to other vehicles. The pad thickness must be measured...less than 1 mm is cause for replacement. Periodic inspection (measurement) is part of the maintenance schedule. How often you need to replace depends on many things, as you have indicated. I got 14K out of my rear pads, and the front is still going strong at 23K. If your tech says they need to be replaced, ask him what they measured. If he can't answer, go elsewhere.

I changed then at 34k on my RT. I had NO PADS left. Should have changed them much sooner. I should have taken a picture. BUT the Spyder still stopped ok.

Interesting..!!

Very strange. Should last allot longer than 800 miles. Sure he is a brp mechanic..multi-dealer's may not always use the proper tech and they would naturally see the pads as way to thin. As mentioned, ask for the measurement or have them re check and still get the measurement...

worn pads ? probably not

ok this is now making sense this low pad eval. was done just like you would do your car, quick peek by the calibrated eyeball!!!!,so im probably fine as far mechanics go they do most of thier learning by people like myself getting work done and discussing things learned here on this site. its a shame and i cant totally blame them completlyjust not too manyto work on yet in my area ,but its growing

Once they reach the thickness of a nickel; it's time to yank them!
The fronts do seem to last an awful lot longer...

800 miles and worn out. Definitely callers for a second or third opinion. If they are indeed correct then a mechanical or human factor is the next step to diagnose. JMO!

800 miles only, even if you are riding with your foot on top of the brake pedal, your pad should not wear that fast. Get a second opinion like others have suggested.

A new nickel is 1.95 mm, a new dime is 1.35 mm. Replacing at the thickness of a nickle is premature. The pads are only about half worn out then. The dime is closer, but there is still room to wait a short while.

I'm pretty hard on my brakes. I just changed mine at 6800 miles. The back was about .7619 mm, while the front had very little wear. Glad I changed them before I messed up the rotor.

My 2012 had the park brake adjusted too tight. Brakes were dragging all the time so I backed off the adjuster a little, no more drag(noise) when going down the road. I'll check them again when I change the oil in a couple weeks.

There is something wrong with your rear pads only lasting 800 miles. There are only a few possibilities.

1- The pads are indeed worn out and there is something mechanically wrong which is wearing your pads excessively.
2- You are incredibly hard on your brakes! :yikes:

3- Your 'Tech' is wrong, either by accident or on purpose. :dontknow:

But as mentioned by others, the actual need for replacement is easily verified by measuring the amount of brake material left on the pad.

My experience and that of most of my brake buying customers is that the front pads last about twice as long as the rears. Mileage varies but 10~15K on the rears and 20~30K on front pads seems to be about average.

I Just re-installed my real wheel last week and noticed I need brake pads as well, 25000km. I will be giving Ron a call this week.

keep in mind, the rear pads are extremely thin when new. My tech said I needed pads long ago and ordered new ones. When he received the new ones, he realized how thin they start out and actually mine still had 90%. Last week mine was in for a service at 19,000+ miles and the read pads were checked and are at 70%. Our riding involves a lot of 2-up with trailer riding.

Just saying!

Checked my rear brakes today. The were completely shot. Last time changed them at 6800, now I'm up to 10616 miles. That's less than 4000 on a set if brakes.

The plunger on the caliper is extremely hard to move. I open the bleeder valve, and used a clamp to move the plunger back in the caliper. It's extremely hard to move even using the brake peddle.

I bled the rear brake, test rode and jacked it back up again. Disconnected the parking brake, to ensure it wasn't too tight, and rotated the wheel. The back brake is not releasing properly. Hard to turn wheel. Removed caliper, and tire turns freely.

Does anyone make a rebuild kit??? Anyone ever rebuild a rear caliper on the Spyder? If I an get parts I'm going to rebuild it, if not guess I'll be replacing the caliper.
