Rear Tire ???

Has anyone brought another brand of tire for your RT-S SE5? If so what brand and how did it perform?

How many miles are you getting on the rear tire? For me it's around 10,000 and wear in the middle. is this normal wear pattern for them?

From what I have been reading, 10,000 miles on the OEM is about average. I replaced mine with a BF Goodrich G-Force. It now has 10,000 miles on it and seems about half used up. It is also a harder tire and, IMO, a lot better tire than the one that comes on the RT. Sadly, BFG has decided to stop making the 225/50/15 but still makes the next narrower size, but I am not sure if that size will fit the RT computer requirements for the tire RPMs, etc.

I put the Michelin HydroEdge 215/60/15 on mine. No issues with the computer & both the speedo & odo are much more accurate, according to my GPS. Speedo is no more than 1 MPH fast and the ODO is about 1.8 miles further @ 100 miles than the GPS.

I got 12,000 miles out of my first tire and went with another Kenda oem tire. This time I am only running 24 psi in it cold because my first tire like yours and I think everyone else wore in the center. There was lots of tread on the edges. I talked to two guys who have run lower rear tire pressures and theirs wore even so I am trying it out. I did check my pressure after a ride on a hot day and it did increase to 27 psi from 24 psi which is a normal increase so if under inflated it would have over heated more then the 10% that is normal. Good luck.

Switched out my OEM rear tire to a Toyo Proxes 4 car tire (same size as OEM) at about 11,000 miles. I have only put about 8000 miles on the new tire so the jury is still out on its durability. Looks to be wearing evenly as compared to the pronounced center wear on the OEM that you noticed. Performance (traction and running in the rain) of the Toyo is pretty well the same as the OEM for me.

I only got 7000 miles out of the stock chicken skin... :gaah: Running 28 psi, I wore out the center tread section. I've since put on a Falken ZE912 and it's been running GREAT! :2thumbs: I dropped the pressure to 26psi in it to see if that helps with tread life...
I just love telling the Missus that I've got to out and put some air in that "Falken" tire :roflblack:

I pushed the OEM on our 2010 RTS to approx. 12,000, and then
slapped on a Kumho 225/50/15 Ecsta AST at a cost of $109.00
vs dealer pricing. the pressure gets checked every couple of weeks
when it gets a bath, and tread depth at every svc.

OEM tire is a softer compund for better grip, but does NOT last a
long time (IMHO). the Kumho has worn well and with VERY little
tread loss. this works for me !!!

George, I switched to the Kuhmo when my original tire gave out at 10k miles. I have 8700 miles on the Kuhmo and am noticing wear... more on the left (drive) side. I'll probably get more miles than the original out of the Kuhmo, but the strange wear pattern has me puzzled. The OEM tire wore out in the center, but evenly left to right. Me thinks that plan "C" in in order for the next change.

I got about 15000 each out of my first 3 tires. I am now on my 4th with 50,000mi on my RT. I have always used BRP recommended tires.
If you have excess wear in the middle of the tire, you have the air pressure too high. You should run about 28psi. At least that's what I run.

My rear tire log

#1. 9k wore bare in center:yikes:
#2. 1Ok tread wore in center again
#3. 12k tread looking great..dropped psi to 27

All of these tires are brand came with Spyder...

Same for me. It's only got 4,000 miles, so it still looks new. I used 32 psi at the start and it was wearing perfectly and handled much better in curves. :firstplace:I do have ELKAs :firstplace:on the front and 50% on air bag for just me. I upped the pressure to 36 and it seems even better. This is a subjective judgement, of course, so we'll see how it works out. I'm not passing any Rockets in the curves yet, maybe when I get to 40 psi!!:yikes:

Has anyone started a spreadsheet on tires that work?

Just bought my spyder last Tuesday, and won't options

Welcome Aboard! :ohyea:
Options?? Has anybody ever done anything like that to a Spyder??? Is it possible?? :roflblack:
(Search for the word, "farkle" and see what pops up!)

I just bought the Michelin but haven't had my dealer put it on yet. 19,000 on my OEM and center is pretty thin. Will change in a week or so when I get the new recall's done. Be ready for SITR! As I've said before, my Silver Seal has run flawlessly all it's life:yes:

You mentioned installing the Michelin when you get the new recalls done. Is your dealer going to install the Michelin??

I met a gentleman from Ohio here is east tennessee on his way to the Smokey Mountains. His RTS had the orgional tire with good tread left and he had 12,000 miles on it. I ask him about pressures and he has always ran 28#. I am sure he has another 3,000 on that tire. I had to change mine at 11,000 due to the center wearing out. As others have said, still good tread on the edges. I am now running 27-28 lbs and chedking it often. (I put the factory tire back on it).
