Rear Tire Wear

What kind of milage are you all getting on the rear tire.? My 2010 Rts has 11,000 miles on it and is wearing in the center. Is this about right for when you have to get a replacement one? I doubt if the dealership I go to has one in stock. Should I go with the same brand tire that came from the factory, or is there another brand that ya'll would sugest??

I replaced my original rear tire with an OEM tire at 9,040 miles. It was completely worn out in the center of the tread. Replaced that tire at 14,450 miles with the same size Kumho Ecsta although it wasn't completely worn out. Currently have 26,7xx miles on it and the rear tire still has tread left. I don't think the Kumho has quite as much grip as the OEM tire but it's close enough. Since the Kumho is a car tire with different cord design than a motorcycle tire, I run 32 PSI in it.

I don't have a RT...I have a GS. I got about 12K from the stock tire and went with the Kumho after, running 35 psi. I had the Kumho for about 12K before I changed the rear tire again...not because it was worn out...it still had another 10k wear left, but it hydroplaned way too easily. I'm now running a Toyo and it is great! :ohyea:

My original rear tire was replaced at 12,000 miles with a Kumho. Like Some Guy I did have hydroplaning issues with the Kumho. But it lasted 18,000 miles and I replaced it with another Kumho.

did you ever try reducing tire pressure to prevent hydroplaning? just curious. only have 5k on mine and it hasn't rained much here in Austin, but I'd always heard it was wise to reduce pressure in the rain to give more contact with road surface.

I am consistently getting 13,000 to 15,000 miles on rear tires. They do seem to wear out in the center first. I keep my tire pressure at the recommended 28# psi.

19,000 on the oem. Kumho here and no issues, already have 3500 miles with 38psi, I'm going to drop it to 34psi. It appears to have a slight bulge in the center. The tire sits perfectly flat on the surface from side to side. But I'm sure it has gyro growth at 60mph. As with anything not oem, it's trial and error. It also depends on the weight you apply to the bike.

9300 miles on the stock and changing it now for a stock one: I will not redo R&D for Can Am and so the stock at stock pressure is ok for me!!

I think I'd put up with the hydroplaning if we would just get some rain. Seriously, I have noticed some hydroplaning at times with both the OEM and the Kumho but I haven't had any real problems with either. It's been a while since we've had enough rain here to be able to hydroplane with anything. If I lived where you do, it might be a different story.

Got 13,000 on ther original and ordered a Khumo for the rear. 5,000 miles and 32 and I just upped it to 36 to try it out. No problems at 32, and wearing evenly with 9mm depth all over. Atf2/3 the cost, 2 or 3 times that wear and successfully used by mony alreay, it seemed to make sense.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this. I feel that I have miles left on the tire just from looking at it, but, it would not pass inspection here in NC as it is. I might take the old tire and plant some flowers in it, that way I can still get some use out of it.

I got 14K from the original tire...the center wore out first, but only by a few 32nds. probably bulging from centripetal force...this is a thin carcass. I replaced it with another Kenda. 14K is more than twice the mileage I get from my BMW tires...and the Kendas are cheaper. I am satisfied.

So the center section will wear out from ballooning (underinflation??), OR from over-inflation...
I need aspirin!

Where's the perfectflation??

RT rear tire wear...

Here's what puzzles me...

Let me clarify by saying that after the OEM tire wore out at 11k miles, I replaced it with a Kuhmo. At the rate the Kuhmo is wearing, I don't expect to get any more miles out of it than the Kenda.

My wife's PT Cruiser weighs 3200 lbs with a little over half the weight on the front tires. Each drive tire, wiith about 850 lbs of weight on it, is propelling 1600 lbs of weight down the road... and will average over 40,000 miles before it needs to be replaced.

The RT riden one-up has approx. 400-450 lbs. of weight on it, and propells about 1150 lbs down the road. Doesn't it stand to reason that we should be able to get at least 30k out of an automotive replacement tire? :dontknow:
