Rear tire wear

I still am not sure about a car tire on my RT so will just bite the bullet and stay with the Kenda. I will try to be easier on the throttle to get a few more miles on my rear tire. At 11000 miles I think I can get to 12,000 miles. I do think that the bearings will need to be changed after the next tire anyway so to good a tire and I could lose a bearing on the road somewhere. I wonder why bearings don't last to long in the Spyder?

I just replaced my Kenda [08 Gs 18k] with another Kenda, Also bearings, I figured they treated me well why change.:dontknow:

center wear

I have semi`s an I can tell you with certainty that if you over inflate the center of the tire it will wear first,I now run 100 not 110 in all my tires an thats all it takes.

Same problem 1000 lb or 80,000 lb

Got fly?:ani29:

I run 20/30 a little over max as recommended by BRP. It rides and handles better for me and my riding style. Yeah they will most likely wear faster but I did not buy the :spyder2: because its economical but to ride. If it cost a little more every 10,000 miles that's just the cost of riding. And yes I am retired and on a fixed budget.:doorag:

I'm with Scotty...and oldandgrouchy
For what the RT/S is designed for .....touring/cruising.... run recommended settings, or live with the consequences
If you ride it differently, live with accelerated tire wear or buy something more suited to your riding style.
The faster you go the lower tire pressure you run...ask any racer. that was the first thing they told me when I went to a track day...drop your psi by 10.
I also ride a Ducati 1098 and my rear tires cost $350 a pop...if that happens to be every 5000m or 10000m...who cares
If you do....find another hobby.
A couple of psi either way is probably not going to make a lot of difference.
but like Scotty says... $20 a year on tire rubber...wtf....
Motorcycles of any description are hard on tires, so is a car if you drive it hard.
Tire wear goes with the ride...live with it or move on to the mobility scooter...wait ...I don't think the tire wear is all that great on those either.
cheers

rear tire change...

Let's face it, changing the rear tire is a time consuming, labor intensive process... especially if you do it yourself. Sure you could pay the dealer, but then your paying more for the labor than for the tire itself. Unlike a front tire change, the rear requires re-allignment and that is a substantial part of the labor cost i'm sure. I changed mine at 10k miles just two weeks ago, and I sure don't want to be doing this every 10 thousand miles... that's why I decided to try an automotive tire. Hopefully I can double or tripple my mileage.

rear tires

replaced rear tire on my rts at 12000 kms with a falken 912 now have 29000 kms and wear is down past the wear bars so have 17000 kms on this tire. have been keeping 30# in rear tire and it also wore in the centre.Actually I am dissapointed thought i would get better mileage out of a car tire :(

fyi--I bought a kuhmo 225/50/15 to replace the stock tire on my RT. After getting it home I discovered it was a full inch wider & 3/4 in taller. The wider part concerned me because of sidewall flex. My tire guy reserched until he found a tire that was of the same dimensions as the kenda with the same revolutions per mile , and was also directional. The tire is the yokohama Sdrive 205/55/15 $121.00 2 k mi & all is very well so far---Budro

Is this the automotive tire you guys have been replacing the rear tire with ?

Center wear theory

I have been thinking about this wear thing. First let me tell you the two that had lower pressure had no signs of abnormal wear in the center of the tire. Now another thing I noticed with 24psi in my rear that when I open the throttle the rear doesn't spin like it did before, it just seems to bite in. You talk about racers and pressure, if a tire is inflated right it should only heat up or increase pressure by no more then 10% of the cold pressure. I'll check mine out after a ride. Now another thing I wonder about this Kenda tire is rim width. Car tires fit rims from one width to another. I wonder If the rim is just a tad to narrow for a 205 cut and the sidewalks are pushing the center tread up. Like how about a 195/50 instead of a 205/50?

I was at my dealer yesterday and met a guy with. GS and his rear tire was wearing even and had more miles left on it at 13,000 miles. I was amazed and asked how much pressure he was running. He said 22psi in the rear. I took a look at the sidewalk of the rear Kenda and the max load is at 30psi. I for one will not run 30 or even 28psi again in my rear. I have 24psi in it now and find it hard to spin now. I hope to get some more miles out of it as the sides do have lots of tread left.

:agree: Seems a lot of new people are getting into the world of wheeled recreational vehicles, And don't quite get it.

I replaced my Kenda with a car tire this summer. Proxes 4, the same size as the oem tire. The dealer mounted it and we used Dyna Beads to balance it and all is good. I will put car tires on the front this winter.

There is no noticeable handling differences between the Kenda and the Proxes 4 and I hope to at least double my mileage using a car tire. Given that I ran a car tire on the back of my Goldwing I have been over to the dark side before.:doorag:

just a suggestion about this thread...

try and put as much info on here about the PSI you run, tread depths, mileage and what you are finding for replacements.

this is a concern that BRP is aware of; and our input IS making a difference. so load some good info on here, and it may just pay off...

I noticed on my 010 RT-S when I got home from the Aderondacks that my rear tire was worn in the center also. I have just over 7K.:( Im ready to let some air out. It might be to late for that. But, I'm still going to try to get 10k out of this tire. Thats what I got on my 08 RS stock tire. I went to a car tire on the RS when I replace new. Thats what Ill do with the RT-S. Think it was ????? Can't remember. The compound is a lot harder than on the stock tire. RS has over 21k and not even close to the wear marks. Looking for 15k. Then change all 3 tires this time.

My OEM rear tire was finished at just over 12K miles, with it's lifetime pressure @ 28psi. After doing some serious research on this site and others I decided to switch to an automotive tire, a "Toyo Proxes 4 A/S 225/50R15".... About 1/2 the price of the OEM and hopefully twice the tread life. On our flat riding Spyders, contact patch isn't the issue it is with our two wheeled friends, so a soft compound isn't as critical, especially on the rear tire. I have around 2000 miles on the Toyo. Hot, dusty, heavy rain, etc.... and I am completely pleased with it's traction and performance of this tire so far. The tread pattern is very similar to my OEM rear tire. I purchased the Toyo online for just under $100 + $30 to mount it. I didn't have it balanced as I put the specified amount of "Ride On" in the tire at the time of mounting.... Len

Dealer Install

I asked my dealer about a car tire and having them install it for me but under the table, no receipt, just a cash deal. He told me that BRP has told it's dealers NOT to install car tires on our Spyders. after giving it a lot of thought, I will stay with the Kenda but with lower pressure. I will start it with 24psi and I think that is enough for my needs. It is there now and it feels good. My first Miata in 1990 called for only 26psi in it's tires.

Tires made by different manufacturers may (or may not) measure slightly differently in terms of width and/or height despite being the same specified sizes. The differences are small .

Thus, no senility involved! :o)
