Rear Tire Pressure/Life

frank3

RT-S PE#0180
The rear tire on my RT-S is worn to the wear bars in the center. The Rt has 7300 miles on it, ridden one up most of the time, no burn outs & running 28 PSI. Is this normal and should I lower the pressure to 24 PSI? Really need some help here. Hate having to buy a new tire every 6 months. :gaah:

Lamont,
Because the heavy wear is located right in the center, wondering if I might lower the pressure down to 22-24 PSI. Thinking that, like cars, over inflation causes this type of wear pattern. I don't think the ride or handling would suffer, fact is, ride would be improved. Anyway, when thay install the new tire, I'm going to try 22 PSI for a while and see what happens. What pressure are you using?

:dontknow:
Are you sure your looking it the wear bars?
The wear bars are in line with the little triangles on the side of the tire.
The bars with lines in them aren't wear bars.

Tire pressure does not appear to help the infamous center wear problem. At speed the center of the tire balloons and therefore wears quicker. Aftermarket tires tend to wear more evenly and ride better too!

Rear tire

I just posted elsewhere I just replaced today my wifes 2nd rear tire a Nitto nt450 it had 10,500 mi. , I switched to a 215/60-15 Douglas 40,000mi. tire, have started it at 18psi. The 215 opens many tire choices, the slightly narrower tread should help with rain and get a flatter footprint, we went through this with my wife two previous Wing Trikes, we are planning a trip to alaska in 2011 and need my wifes bike to get better tire life . 215 is about 1.3in. taller but you negate some of that with the wide wheel, seem like a better way to go .

I wonder if that throws some issues to the stability control as the tires size will change the speedo? Have there been any issues? One up riding will wear out rear tires on most bikes. I wonder what the cost of a rear replacement tire will cost me, any figures? I will be in Florida ( Panhandle ) and might need one before I go home. Labor must be an hour or more I would imagine plus the OEM tire cost as well. I run 30 psi in my rear and find even wear so far (6000 miles) and might even get 3000 more out of it, I hope !!.

I traded my '09 GS for my RTS. The GS had 9600 miles on it and the tire was still close to 50% tread left. On my RTS the center of the tire was bald at 8000 miles.
I had a Kuhmo Ecsta AST installed for the replacement tire. I've got about 4000 miles on the Kuhmo and it is nowhere 50% worn.
The Kuhmo cost about $80 delivered to my door from Tire rack.

Now that sounds like the same wear factor for the Kuhmo as OEM and does it handle as well. I do wonder the difference from a car tire to a motorcycle tire? I think if I were to try out something else, I would look for a 1 ply sidewall and summer only to get a sticky tire but even that might wear the same as OEM tire so why? Is it the price of the OEM tire? Still don't know yhat and has any other company built one yet? What kind of labour costs associated with the complete install & balance?? Just wondering what to expect ??
