Rear Shock

Any one know if someone makes an aftermarket rear shock for the RTS,as I am haveing a hard time getting a good one from BRP for my RTS.
First one lasted about a mounth and a half the second one lasted two days and the 3rd one is on it now but don't know how long it will hold up.
Thanks:chat:

I hope some does post about a aftermarket rear shock. I have my RTS for a month now, and have already had to replace the shock. It spent the last 2 weeks in the shop. I just got it back yesterday and made up for lost time and put 500 miles on it that day. I look foward to riding this bike every day and can see myself putting 10000 plus miles on this summer

I think Matt at Kewlmetal is working with Elka on a rear shock for the RT. I sent Elka a picture out of the shop manual of the rear suspension system. I had asked about a rear shock from them and they said they didn't have any because of the air shock. The picture shows them that the shock is not an air shock so they then said maybe they could come up with something. I suspect Kewlmetal will have one available within a few weeks. I also have had to have my rear shock replaced.

I hope they come up with one soon as I just spoke to my dealer and mine is ready to pick up today and they don't think this new one will last very long so I guess I will keep trying to ride the pogo stick untill someone comes up with a good rear shock!:gaah:

Next time you stop by your BRP dealer grab the rear of an RT on the showroom floor and bounce it. For the first 2-3 bounces the shock has NO rebound dampening effect, then it firms up. It's the oddest thing. I've tried it on mine and 5 other Rt's and if they have been sitting , they all do the same thing, bounce like a pogo stick and then on like the 3rd or 4th compression you feel them firm up. Whatever the reason , THAT is not normal.
I offer no reasons why , its just an observation. At 350 miles my shock on my RTS is holding up.

All this just makes me wonder.:spyder:

Here's a point to ponder.... have any RT's that are not RTS's had a shock fail? ie
: the audio convenience I drove had a standard shrader valve and you had to manually fill the shock. Obviously my RTS has the compressor Has anyone experienced a failure on these? If the answer is "no", I wonder if the shock is actually failing on the RTS models or its something else (the fitting ear the compressor) OR better yet , the compressor could be overfilling the shock and blowing out the air bladder..... so anyone with a RT or Rt audio and convenience with the issue? Lets hear from some folks and nail this down.
OK never mind I see a couple posts showing the standard RT has had the symptom also

I don't think the "air shock" is failing. As I understood it, the failures were for the dampening properies of the standard shock. The RT model has two "shocks" that share the rear suspension load. Both are "sprung" but only the standard one is dampened.

Allow me to correct my post that at 350 miles my shock was still fine..... At 656 miles I now have a pogo stick. It's rideable one up with the air setting on firm but has almost no rebound. I popped it apart to look and it's a very standard rear shock. The air bag resides separately in front of it and is what adds additional compression dampening and ride height adjustments. There is a small rheostat attached to a plastic linkage that then connects to the swing arm to tell the computer how much sag is in the rear suspension to then operate the air compressor . The air bag looks identical to an air bag on a semi truck suspension but about one third the size. That being said an aftermarket supplier should have zero issues coming up with a rear shock. My theory is the shock internals are way too small to stand up to the rigors of the up and down motion that it is being asked to control. The shock is smaller than the shock on my yamah venture and is supporting easily three times the weight. Once you compress all that weight and two riders the internals need to control the rebound as it springs back up. Rather than having a bad batch of shocks IMHO only we have shocks that are too small. Now the big question...how many have failed and the riders do not even know it. My wife rode it to work and back today and said it was fine, about 60 miles expressway, side roads, you name it. I shoved the back end down and she watched as it hopped up off the ground... Wow she said...:yikes:

I told my service writer that they better get in a stock of the rear shocks cause their gonna need em. I'd prefer not to spend more money on Elkas but if I have to I guess I will. I don't have much confidence in the new one lasting very long.

Same here, I got mine back Sat. and all is well so far but I won't be surprised when it fails again. As for paying for a better rear shock I think that is BRP's responsability as far as I'm concerned after buying this 25K plus bike we should not have to spend more money on it to make it right!

rear shock

I have the standard RT. For the past week the rear shock has been making a loud metal against metal "clunking" noise whenever I go over a large bump or a manhole cover that is deep below the road surface. The noise happened when the shock rebounded from the bump, it was not bottoming out. I had the shock air pressure at 44 lbs. I paid a visit to the dealer today and after about 45 minutes we found that the noise disappeared when the air pressure was decreased to 40 lbs. It looks like the rear shock has to be set strictly within the parameters of the chart in the owners manual. You cannot set the pressure high, like on a Gold Wing, to raise the rear and give you a firmer ride. It has to be set according to the weight of the rider, passenger and luggage. I guess I'll have to carry a scale around with me to weigh the passenger so I can set the shock. I've got 2300 miles on so far and no other problems.

The problem is when the shock tops out. I guess a run of the rear shocks have had this issue. It should be replaced.

Sorry Coolbreze, but I don't think your dealer has a clue. Try this, let all of the air out of your air bag, then push down on the passenger grab handle and let go. If it tops out (bang) it's toast. Better ask him to order one for stock so you won't have to wait so long.
Dwight.

Mine is going in to-morrow for its 4th rear shock.

The standard shock is rubbish and it should be BRP that come up with a fix.
I am averaging 2100 miles between shocks. Not good for a top end machine.
Come on BRP lift your game.:bdh:

Good not the only one mine has been at the dealer for two weeks waiting on a shock. Was told that they have not released it to be shipped from BRP yet. Does that mean they are trying to correct the problem:pray:. We all can only hope so.

Had to bring my RT-S to the dealers' yesterday, as the rear shock has gone. Only 750 miles on it, and svc. manager tells me this morning shock is back ordered at BRP, and probably won't be in for a couple of weeks. I noticed that when I was getting on and off, that it did have the pogo stick syndrom. Well, I guess the Memorial Day Parade I was supposed to be in is out. :gaah:
