Rear Shock Replacement

Brought my Can Am RT into the local dealership for a 9000 mile service. Was informed that my rear shocks are in need of replacement. They quoted me around $90+ for parts and three hours labor at $110 per hour. I live in the San Diego area. Is this a reasonable estimate for the work to be performed. Just my luck that my two year warranty from date of purchase ran out last month.

Don't know..!!

seems steep. We have an RS and can replace the shock in half an hour. If yours is the air shock with compressor etc and an RT I don't know how much more is involved. Those with RT's will let you know soon. Don't have manual for RT to check flat rate.. Good luck if you need help pm me..!!

Rear Shock...

I have a 2010 RT and had the rear shock go out last month. I'm in the Sacramento area and that sounds about right on the replacement shock and the hours/fee at my local dealership. The hard part is that they have to order that rear shock from Can Am in Canada and it takes about 9 days for it to be delivered to the CA. They had my spyder for almost two weeks because I took it in before the Memorial Day Weekend. It wouldn't of been so bad if the one guy hadn't told me they could have it in 3-5 days and I'd have my ryde back before the weekend. *sigh*

I have to put air in my rear shock about every 3 days. Dealer says nothing wrong but if I want to drop my RT off and leave it for an unknown amount of time they will "Take a look" at it. Service manager says no rear shocks have been replaced in his experience. Yeah I know, find another dealer. There are several in the Minneapolis area and I am thinking of changing to someone else.

If you are adding air, it is not the shock that is bad - it is the load leveling air bag. Replacement for that may be more costly for a shock. I know when I replaced my shocks with Elkas, the book said 1.5 hrs for all 3. INHO, the rear one seemed to be the easiest, at least the way that the tech did it ....

Seems pretty normal. You can try replacing the valve stem, but not sure how much longer you will be able to go without putting in more air.

Just a thought i would check to see if the rear shock has a recall on it seems to me ive heard some have been replaced under warentee.

I wonder how hard the rear shock is to replace on the RT? Any directions posted? :dontknow:
Video would be Nice!

If you're handy, you can trouble shoot it first. Like putting air and ready your water and soap mix and spray it around the air fitting and see if you have air leak. if you do then replace the air fitting and recheck again. Good luck and hope you find a easy solution.

Seems Very high labor for replacing rear RT shock only

Are you able to change rear shock yourself ( or maybe a motorcycle/spyder rider friend that would)? The labor seems really high for a 1 hour job replacing rear shock on 2011 Spyder RT-S. Is your rear air bag holding air ok. Just lift seat & put a air pressure gauge on schrader valve to check how much air pressure is in the bag. If rear bag is holding air:
I would recommend buying a rear Elka stage 1+ shock from Len at Pit Bull Powersports Springfield, Mo 417-863-1418; to replace b.o. stock rear shock. (If I was closer to San Diego, Ca I would install new rear Elka shock for you, as it is a straight forward job with lifting rear of Spyder a little, & using 15mm socket/wrenches to remove/replace shock bolts/shock).
