Rear shock absorber question.

Just recently the RT-S has been making a loud "clunk" on rare ocassions when the bike encounters a bump or dip in the road. I can't tell if it's bottoming or topping. I checked the rear shock. Here is what happens when I check it with about 30 lbs. pressure in the air bag.

- If the Spyder has been parked for a couple of hours when I press down hard on the rear end the first time it springs up, tops out (clunk), and will oscillate once or twice. It only acts like this if the bike has been parked for a while.

- The second time I press down it returns to home position slowly. I still get the clunk but its not as loud but there is no oscillation.

I checked the air bag and it is holding it's pressure.

Is this normal behavior fo the shock? Does it take one compression to set itself up after it has been idle for a while?

It's going in for the 3000 mile oil change Wednesday. At the same time they will be doing the rear end inspection and calibration as outlined in the recent service bulletin.

Service info/rear shock/RT dealer

We have had issue with RT's blowing the rear shock. Needs Campaign 2010-6 performed and likely a new rear shock. It sounds like its pogoing, sure sign its blown.

I cut the hi tech gauges as per the service bulletin (4 1/8" and 5 7/8" 4x4's) for the dealer. I'm pretty sure they won't have them. Just got back from a 2 hour ride. The shock has definitely shi* the bed. It is now topping and out hard and playing bouncey every time I push the rear end down and release it. The shock is no doubt not in the dealer's stock.

They have a new "better" shock that they are using now. I just had one installed several weeks ago, much better but the question now is how long will it last?

HA HA HA

If they told you it was a new shock they are blowing smoke up your yea. On my third one it is the same as the old one had the dealer bring it out so I could see it. The can-am rep said that there are only two other bikes with the same problem around the world I told him he must not read this site. :chat:

reconscout,
You may be right. The new shock they installed on mine was the result of a conversation with Kurt and Carlo at the Chicago owners doins. Kurt told me he would send my dealer a new shock that was "better" than the oe stuff. So far it appears that it is, even the SO commented on the difference of the ride since the new shock was installed. By the way this is the second replacement. I never got the chance to look at the new shock. When the service manager called me after the owners meeting he said that as soon as he got the new shock he would call and set up an appointment. It arrived about a week later. It is possible that they do have a better one comming, but may try to use up existing stock first. All I know is there is a definate improvement, no more bouncing down the road. Currently I'm at 11K + on the RT-S

It is a redesigned shock. The washer that protects the rubber bushing has been changed. I don't think there were any more changes than that.

I see Elka now has a rear shock for the RT. :doorag:

Drove it to the dealer today for the 3000 mile oil change and the four items in service bulletin 2010-6. A couple of hours later the dealer calls to verify, as I suspected, the shock is bad and they will have the new one next week.

The SB clearly states to check the shock make sure there is 30lbs pressure in the air suspension system and make sure the suspension does not top out after pressing down on the rear of the vehicle. Very simple...no need to tear down the bike.

So I tell the dealer, fine, I'll pick up the bike and bring it back next week when shock arrives. He advises me the bike is torn down and and I can't have it until next week when the shock arrives. What the finger! Why did they tear it down???

I've been driving the bike in it's present state for well over 500 miles and other that a couple of "top outs" it has been ok to drive. Now I won't have the bike for a week (or more probably) and to add a little salt to the wound I won't be able to show it off my out of town company this weekend. UGH!

I brought service bulletin 2010-7 (brake pads) to the dealers attention. They were not aware of it. They were also not aware of service bulletin 2010-6 (4 items) until I brought that to their attention. My confidence in the dealer is eroding.

When the dealer called to give me the bad news he did say they had the new brake pads in stock and they installed them. Does anyone know the part number for the new (SB 2010-7) pads? I want to verify the pads they installed where actually the new ones.

Thanks,
Rick

Shock and new generation brake pads.

Picked up the Spyder today. It has been at the dealers for a week due to a bad shock.

- 3000 mile service
- Replaced the shock
- Service bulletin 2010-6 / July 26, 2010 (Grommets, Antenna, Rear suspension calibration and fault codes )
- Service bulletin 2010-7 / April 29,2010 (Third generation brake pads)

It riding much better with the new shock. On my short trip home the brakes did not squeal but time will tell.

The part numbers for the third generation pads are:

Front: 219800164
Rear: 219800165
