How many have removed the rear fender and left it off?? If so how did you mount your plate and hows it do with mud / water flying up your back??PHOTOS WOULD HELP
Thanks ED
Thank you very much for the photos. That helps more than anything.I've been without a fender since last spring when my fender brackets broke. I tried a few different things for a license plate mount and finally settled on a bracket I made to hold the plate off of the Kewlmetal rear rack I got.
first attempt with a motorcycle fender we bought off of SpyderGirl.

I saw a similar thing on an Australian website but I was never able to get the motorcycle fender to be sturdy enough and it rubbed on the tire whenever I went over bumps. I tried remounting and shaving the motorcycle fender down but I never got it to work like I wanted.
Next, I made a bracket to hole the license plate vertical on the left side of the swing arm but the combination of vibration and wind was too much for the bracket to handle and it broke after about 1,000 miles.

This is what I'm using now and it works great. There is more dirt and water flying up off the rear tire but not so bad that I am looking to go back to a fender.

Even with the fender on, I have a mucky mess underneath - you can thank my driveway after a rainy day so it's always been like that. I was going to remove my back fender but now HDX is gonna chop it up for me - we're gonna keep it but modify a bit I think. Also gonna do some chopping of the front ones too. Will post pics when we get to it. Taking it to the dealer for the 12K service and a new rear tire on Monday. Probably won't get to it until after that (unless it rains this weekend and hdx is bored).:2thumbs:
That sounds cool. I can't wait to see the pics of what you guys come up with.
Not going to be anything fancy - at least I don't think. We were gonna chop off where the license plate is now along w/ that fugly light that does nothing. Not sure if we're gonna cut it in a v-shap or I was thinking cut the thing in half or more - just have a small stripe of yellow going across the back tire.
If we do that to the back, we're gonna chop off those mud flaps and shorten the front fenders as much as we can.
HDX likes the corbin fender but I think it costs way too much $$$. They have nice stuff but I refuse to dump hundreds into this. I wanted a bike where, unlike my Harley, I wouldn't need to have to put expensive cosmetic doo dads on it. I was a chromaholic w/ the Harley and no way would I do that again - took too long to clean it! And then when you sell or trade it, your expensive doo dads are worth pretty much nothing.
Spyders look real cool w/ alot of doo dads but I'd rather spend the money on gas going on a trip somewhere :2thumbs:
But I like this 3/4 chop better.

Someone's half chop.
Without a rear fender you get the most awesome rooster tails when it rains! Love to see them, not sure I want one though.
YA Mahn, rooster tails!!Me likes the rooster tail concept. However, the weef doesn't think much of the idea!! :spyder:Grrrrr...
