Rear Fender Removal

I am headed down this path.

For tag light I went with a very small LED from Advance Auto in the Ricer section.

Moved the tag up to the back of the Sportrack which kind of blocks the stock tail lights.

I dont have the new tails yet so no pics as work in progress but should be complete by the weekend.
Here is the so-far picture ....

I am not sure exactly how or where I am going to mount the lights yet.
Hopefully right next to each other in the center right under the tag just like OEM 1959 Caddi.

Keep us informed

I'm thinking about doing a similar thing. I was planning to mount the plate to the bolts that hold the bottom tail cover. I'll need to be sure that it won't hit the tire with a passenger on board. I think it will be a summer job for me.

If you search the forums you'll find a few others who have done this and there are some good ideas in each one.

I'll be watching for your end result. :2thumbs:

Yep, the suspension works pretty good and with the tag mounted below the stock tail lights it will hit. (Ask me how I know this)

The rear tire will almost touch the underpan. (There is a dish in it for a reason)

I always wanted a set of those 59 caddi lights on something. They are wierd looking in a pretty sort of way (just like the Spyder)

Just beware riding without a rear fender.... we had to do a fenderectomy while we were in TN on our cross-country trip and had to ride all the way back to CA without. When it rained we got drenched.

I also rode in dry conditions about 40 miles without the rear fender and ended up with all sorts of junk and crap all over the place underneath and on the painted surfaces.

It looks nice, but seems very necessary. I am going to just chop my rear fender to make it smaller.

Just food for thought.

Having stumbled across Steve's rear fender mod and liking the look, I did the same my self yesterday. Just waiting on a used OEM left bracket to modify and refit the upper belt guard.

Any problems with the new fender rubbing on the tire when going over bumps? I tried that same thing and could never get rid of the tire rub and eventually took it off. I think part of my problem was not getting a really secure mount of the new fender to the Spyder. I was mostly depending on the undertail pan for mounting and it's way too flexible. I was thinking of making bracing to the Spyder frame to stiffen the fender but I decided to go without any fender.

If the suspennsion bottoms out, the tyre will touch the fender. I used a longer bolt thru the original rear most hole in the ZX fender into the origianal bolt hole in the Spyder and drilled 2 more holes in Spyder splash fender and used large flat washers to provide support. I have the rear spring set to max and don't go 2 up. Time will tell if remains untouched. So far so good, but haven't been over any huge bumps yet.

where did you guys get those rear splash guard and plate light?
i think i will do the same.
thank you in advance.

Okay, sounds like I did the mount similar to you. I'm a fairly big guy and the roads here are pretty bad in spots so I probably had more stresses on that fender. I know when I had it, I liked the looks and the possibility of it working.

I did it to :ohyea:I love it. I drilled and tap the luggage rake and moved the fender back about an inch I can ride two up no problem.

Good idea - I'll do the same. Should solve the problem when 2 up.

Nice work guys! That looks really nice. I'm debating as to what I'm gonna do. Of course, mine are too new to worry about at this point. But I know I'll have to address the situation sooner or later as BRP doesn't seem to think there is a problem in this area ( :gaah:) so this is really good stuff to see for reference sake! Thanks!

I wanted to free up my big back tire and still keep the water off my back. I went through the same process that you all did. I made a bracket out of aluminium and mounted it underneath the luggage rack aluminium bracket. That eliminated the flexibility of the rear splash guard sagging down. (That thing ain't coming off now!) I took a come-a-long strap tied it to the middle of my rim and the passenger handlebars and suppressed the rear shock to assure my distance. I hope this helps you guys. BRP should take notice, because this looks way better.

That is one sharp looking Spyder. IMO, that type of rear fender is what BRP should have done in the first place. Their fender struts are too fragile.

Thanks BJT there is a lot of love, time and money in that baby. I noticed that some of you have the bottom belt guard on  I think it is best to throw that thing away. What it does is when you throw a stone onto your belt it kinda guides it to your sprocket rather then letting it fly by. It doesn't eliminate the problem but it minimizes it. The open belt is definitely the way to go, till BRP can solve this problem.
