Rear Axle appears to be backing out

On my first long trip and after the first 300 miles, during a walk around, I noticed that it appears the rear axle is backing out and there is no threads showing through the nut on the other side. Also, usually with a castlated nut there is a cotter pin associated with it? I tried to tighted the nut but it just spins through but is not really loose. I only have a cresent wrench and some pliers with me so when I tried to tighten it by holding one side and turning the other I just did the ole knuckle buster thing lol.

No way this can be normal. But thought I would ask on here. There is no dealer here on the outer banks of NC, but looking for advice, should I monitor until I can find a dealer or go ask any dealer to tighten this up? Or is this normal?

The rear axle nut is 36mm, Hard [for me] to tell from the picture that nut looks smaller than 36mm, Either way it's not normal.
If it is the axle hold the side withOUT the cotter pin tight and tighten from the cotter pin nut. It takes 96flp of toque to tighten to spec.

That's not your axle, that's the bolt that holds your hitch. If you're not towing a trailer I wouldn't be too concerned about it but it should be snugged up asap.

Lamont, are you sure? The bolt in the picture spins all they through to the other side where the nut is when I try to tighten it. I did recently have the hitch kit installed and am towing a trailer this trip. I am confused now, gonna go out and look at it again but I swear the what is depicted in the pictures I posted is line up just like it is the axle and spins from one side to the other. Going to take a second look now.

The axle is hollow, that bolt goes through the axle. Yes I'm sure.

Also there have been problems with dealers not getting the hitch to seat properly and when they tighten up the bolt is is not really tight all the way. I fixed one in the parking lot for a guy this happened to. Looks to me that's what happened here.

Appreciate the information, I will take it to the dealeer when I return home. if I can get my hands on some tools before then I will attempt to tighten it. Until then I will monitor it to be sure it is not backing off further, especially since I am pulling a trailer this trip. Thanksk again, good to know I am not about to lose my rear wheel
