Engine running??

Adjustible Controlled Suspension (ACS) has to meet the fallowing criteria to function:

- Engine Running
- In gear (forward or reverse)
- Park Break Released
- All rear compartments closed

I'm sure you know this, but one missing item and she will not function correctly. That being said, I've come across a couple RT's with a failed resister within the switch assy sub-harness. The resister can be purchased and replaced (requires sub-harness surgery). The units I found were under warranty, so the sub-harness assy was replaced...

Shawn,

So nice of you to share your knowledge, wish more of the certified techs who wrench out there would monitor and add their thoughts to the problems which are posted here. Good to know that BRP supports the products it markets and hoping that all the dealerships who sell their products have at least ONE factory trained and certified technician in their service bays.

One other item to add. The setting does not change when you hold the gauge...at least neither of mine have. First push (with no gauge on the dispaly) brings up the gauge, then each press raises it or lowers it one notch.

The fault you describe occurred on my 2011 RT and it turned out to be nothing more complicated than a missing bolt which you can easily check for yourself.

In the photo the ride height sensor arm (hanging down) should have a 6mm bolt passing through it, fastening it to the (white) frame mounting lug. On assembly at the factory Locktite is applied to the bolt to prevent it from working loose. This step may sometimes be overlooked, or an insufficient amount of Locktite is used and the bolt eventually drops out. The deflated air bag can be seen located to the left of the detached sensor arm. As a temporary fix you can inflate the bag yourself with a garage air hose or tire foot pump. The inflator for the bag is located under the seat on the right hand side of the RT. This procedure is covered in the Spyder's User Manual.

Our new 2012 RT-S was delivered to us this past Saturday. Took it for a 90 mile ride and the first five miles showed something really wrong. No rebound on the rear shock. Every little bump or pothole felt like riding a rigid frame. Found this when we got home.

If this is a known issue then they should have addressed this a while back. Apparently others have this same problem. Being the bike was checked out and prepped just hours earlier and missed is not good.

Can anybody explain if having this disconnected was the whole reason the air suspension switch was not working and why the ride was horrible?

Thank you!

Thank you!

I took delivery of my Spyder RT in March of 2011. On the ride home (about 60 miles) I began to notice that it was becoming increasingly difficult for me to see over the top of the screen. Suspecting a punctured rear tire I stopped to check it out. The tire was OK but I could actually see that the rear end of the Spyder was settled down to a lower position than before and I had also noticed that the suspension had stopped absorbing imperfections in the road surface which made for a harsh ride.

A small panel to the left of the display was lit up in orange and said "Manual". I wasn't familiar enough with the trike to know what this message meant but I later learned that I could have inflated the suspension air bag manually by pressing the (harder) air suspension adjustment button on the dash. The on-board air pump would then have inflated the rear suspension bag so that I could have again seen over the top of the screen and improved my ride!

And all for the want of some LockTite on the threads of a small bolt...:sour:

A disconnected ACS sensor is the fault of poor dealer prep. This should have been connected/checked. After having them make it right, ride around the parking lot and make sure the adjustment feature works properly. The ride height may have to be calibrated.

Thank you for the info. Our dealer is 175 miles away and I hadn't expected needing to bring it back after one day of ownership. haha

I was planning on having them send me the bolt and installing myself but it sounds like they may need to do some adjustments after it is connected.

Scotty, would or could this be the reason we felt we had no suspension in the rear?

Thank you,
Jon

I Have the Manual Rear suspension (No Compressor ) and After I pump it to 30 Pounds (For 200 Pound rider and No Cargo or Passenger) within a few minutes its down to Zero.
The shock absorbs the Bumps OK and I go on some Pretty Bad back roads. I did have to adjust the low beams Down because the rear is probably 1/2 inch lower than the 30 pound setting.
Handles back roads and Highway excellent But I,m wondering if an Elka rear shock would be beneficial?

Is it hazardous to ride SOLO with no pressure in the Bag???:dontknow:

Put in the bolt. You should be able to rig this with a bolt/nut/washers until you receive the proper parts. Be sure to use a lock nut and/or loctite so you don't lose it again. If your suspension works fine after you connect the link, no adjustment will likely be needed, although you may want the dealer to check the calibration before you use the highest settings. If your Spyder does not adjust when running, in gear, with the parking brake off, or it shows "Manual" when you hit the switch, it will need dealer intervention...although it can be adjusted manually.

This could be the reason for feeling like there is no suspension. Check the air pressure at the Schrader valve under the seat. If it is over 100 you have over-pressurized the system and it will ride like a brick truck. If it is 50-100, try letting out a little air...30-40 pounds is typical for most owners riding solo. If it is zero, you may have a leak in your system. This can also make it ride hard...especially two-up if you bottom the suspension. Fill to 20-40 pounds and then check again (without riding the Spyder) the next day. If it is less than what you left it, there is a leak somewhere. Check the Schrader valve for leaks, and see the dealer if that doesn't cure it.

You should always maintain at least 10 psi in the airbag to prevent suspension damage. See the comments about leaks above. Severakl possible sources of leaks, but the Shrader valve is the most frequent.

As always, thank you Scotty. After our ride I did check and it appeared that the system may have had over 90 lbs psi. I lowered to about 40 until I have a chance to ride it again. Talked to the dealer today and he is mailing a bolt. He mentioned that he checked and none of their Spyders had the bolt installed. He said they use a outside firm to setup and deliver their motorcycles and Spyders.
