Real gas and mileage

I have found a gas station in south Georgia that sells real gas... meaning there is no Alcohol in the gas.

We have been testing this non-alcohol gas in two of the spyders and the GL1800. I log mileage and amount when fueling so I have some numbers now.

After clearing the small amount of near gas the Spyders are running much smoother... acceleration is much better and there is no hesitation during a moderate speed roll-on.

On my SM PE548 the mileage went from 32 to 36.5... I'm a little heavy throttled some of the time starting off.

The SE5 that "she who must be obeyed" rides has increased from 30.5 to 34.4... she is better at spinning the rear than I am.

My GL1800 has improved from 38.4 to 49 but I can't attribute it all to the gas because I also changed the rear to a new Energy saver Michelin 195x60 car tire. I was running a Falcon 205 60. Now having said this I have noticed the engine is much smoother and acceleration is much better now. I am "DarkSider 293" meaning I run car tires on the rear of the wing... better traction wet or dry and they don't explode in the summer.

I've been testing this fuel for the past 6 weeks now and the mileages have been fairly constant.

If you are in south Georgia traveling on Interstate 75 the station is located in Adel GA on highway 37 one mile east of the interstate.

Also be advised this real gas sold by Dixie is 12 cents more a gallon. For the performance and mileage increases I experienced I'll gladly pay the extra 12 cents. Ken krb1945

To see if the extra cost is worth the extra mileage, divide your cost of the tank of gas you just replaced by the miles per gallon you got on that tank. I calculate every fill up that way. Sometimes the premium (93 oct) is cheaper per mile than the 87 oct due to the better gas mileage.
Sounds like your increase in mileage may be worth the 12 cents per gallon.

Odd! In general, premium fuels will get worse gas mileage in an engine that does not need them. Regular grade gas has more heat capacity, and thus gives more mpg...all things being equal.

I agree...the studies have shown over and over again that higher octane does not confer an improvement.

On another note, I've been using the Star brite product and I am seeing at least a small change with mileage and performance.

I usually get around 29 mpg with my sidebags on the bike and now with the rear givi (it's behind the rider so likely doesn't affect drag too much anyway).

However, I've used this stuff for about 3 tank loads now and I'm over 31 mpg...my riding has been mixed, as usual. I actually like the stuff...put some in my lawn mower and John Deere gas tanks...let's see what happens there...

Regular gas does

get better mileage. The higher octane was designed to stop the "spark knock", as some of us old timers use to call it, or "pinging". It's that irritating rattle when you accelerate a high compression engine briskly.

I have one of the new 3.5 dual turbo 360 hp engines and regular is working fine in it. Can't tell any difference between premium and regular in this engine so I use regular and this engine is getting 20 mpg. I have the 4 wheel drive without the free wheel hubs. So to me that is pretty good mileage.

It would be nice if they would take the alcohol out of the gas everywhere and stop raising the price of food. I just read a report from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and there is only a 17 day inventory of grain in this country. The grain inventory includes corn and wheat. Ken krb1945

Lots of people get confused about this. Higher octane fuels burn more slowly, reducing the tendency for engine-knock. Lower octane fuels burn faster and hotter, which can cause engine knock. Easy to get the two properties confused.
