• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Garmin Zumo 550

I had been waiting a long time for the price of the Zumo 550 to drop below $600 CDN. It finally happened and I pulled the trigger and purchased my unit from GPS City in Calgary.

The unit was delivered the next morning and I had it mounted on the RT in short order. I use a RAM Mount Aluminum Mini Motorcycle Mount Angled Base with 9mm Hole and 1 inch Ball (as described by Scotty above) and it works just fine. It would be nice to have a BRP mount, or even the Kewlmetal bracket, but that can wait. The unit comes with all the mounting hardware, excluding the Angle Base which I already had mounted on my handlebars for my previous GPS. The included power cord I ran through the handlebar insert to my fuse block in the front trunk and I also ran a stereo cord through to the rear trunk to hook into my RT speakers from the audio out on the GPS.

Since I already have a Scala Teamset array for our helmets, I can now listen to the GPS commands from the Zumo, initiate and answer telephone calls from my cell phone and listen to music from the GPS through my headset. My wife appreciates the fact that she does not have to listen to the GPS chattering away on her headset. However, I will probably stick with listening to my music from my IPOD Touch on the external speakers and only pipe the GPS and Telephone through to my headset.

If you are looking for a basic, inexpensive GPS system I would recommend buying a Nuvi 255W, mounting cradle, bolt on adapter and short arm mentioned above. If it rains, wrap it in a plastic baggie. I used it for years on three bikes, before finally going with a Zumo. I could have managed with my Nuvi, but given the amount of touring I do this upgrade better meets my needs.
