RAM ball mount custom Install 2020 RT

I wanted to have a good looking Ram ball mount for my GPS and phone . I looked at my Ram handlebar clamp mount I have in my toolbox and also looked at Lamonsters solution. I didn’t want the clamp look and Lamonsters would drop the GPS or Phone directly in front of the digital gauges . On the previous RT the handlebar design dropped the center GPS mount lower, out of the line of sight of the gauges. So I took matters into my own hands and came up with a solution that in my opinion looks great , is strong and functional and the budget was not broken at $8.98....
The right handlebar trim piece is metal and had a large area of open space underneath the trim , between the trim piece and the bar which is not exposed.

Pop off the trim using your Allen wrench and drill a hole in the top piece which will be just large enough for a 1/4-20 1/2 inch long Allen bolt

DO NOT drill the hole while the trim piece is on the bar. There is a wire about an inch down that you could hit.

Here is the Ram mount and Part Number

Here it is with the Allen bolt and lock washer (Lowes)
Ok so thread the bolt through the hole and tighten into the Ram ball using thread lock and reattach trim piece .

Oh and there’s an Easter egg in this post somewhere see if somebody can find it since we have nothing better to do than sit home in quarantine right now

What a great work-around! Do I have permission to borrow your idea?
Where does the 1/4-20 X 1/2" Allen bolt go? I see one threaded hole with the Ram ball in it. Am I missing something?

Sorry that’s the one picture I forgot to take ......once you take the appearance cover off and drill the hole you thread the bolt up through the appearance cover into the ram ball which is threaded 1/4 20. The head of the bolt is underneath the appearance cover there is way more than enough room for it I used an Allen bolt because it has the smallest head but you can use a regular bolt very easily there’s a big gap between the appearance cover in the handle bar. This is about a 20 minute project if you go slow , super easy.

Wonderful idea and job. I considered the same think except I was concerned that there was not enough metal to drill and tap 1/4 20. It did not occur to me to put the head of the bolt on the inside. Creative thinking on your part. I did the following with Lamont's SpyderCuff to mount my phone and cup holder. On a separate bar-mounted Ram Mount I placed my GPS. I'm pleased and your idea is outstanding as well.

Thanks for the idea Widowmaker. I had a Ram ball that had 10-24 threads, os all I had to do was drill a hole.

No disrespect but this project I did is literally the same and the price is about 8 dollars for the RAM mount on Amazon or EBay and 10 minutes work versus almost $75 bucks for the Lamonster piece . If you can unbolt the cap and reinstall it which you have to do with either project , all you need to do is drill one hole . That’s a huge savings of almost 90% . Either way is good I just chose to keep my hard earned money .

MtnSpyder, I do apologize for not finding the ram mount you describe at gpscity, if you could isolate what your using a bit more, much appropriated. Maybe if you could post a pic of your set up. Many thanks.

Sorry for the problem finding it. I didn't actually look for the mount on their site, but it looks like EdMat nailed it. I just know from buying stuff in the past GPS City seemed to have all things RAM available at a decent price. If RAM makes it, gpscity.com has it, I think!

I have a RAM ball with an integrated 1/4-20 thread in my RAM parts box. On the left bar I have 2 RAM balls and a cigarette style power outlet on a Spyder Cuff to spread out the strain of the stuff mounted there. I was going to use the threaded RAM ball as RICZ did on the right bar, but I like the idea of having the bolt head, and possibly a washer in the inside to spread out the stress of the weight on the mount.
