There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Radio problems

Desert Spyder

A new Spyder friend of mine has had a problem with his radio suddenly getting loud with static after an hour of running. This is an inconsistent thing. He has a 14 RT. Dealer says they can't do anything until they witness it. Any ideas?

Is he sure it's not a distance from the transmitter issue, or getting in the vicinity of static generating electrical equipment? I know the BRP radio gets very noisy when you get into an area of reduced FM signal strength caused by distance, hills, forests, etc. The Can Am radio is weak in its ability to cleanly pick up weak FM signals.

Thats a good question. On AM you would get a lot of static under a power grid. He lives in Lake Havasu and he commented an hour into the ride. Not so much FM. But why would the volume suddenly jack up?

So make an appointment with dealer to listen to it after you take a nice 1.5 hour ride. So when you get there he can witness it.

Make certain the nut on the bottom of the antenna is tight.
A slightly loose connection can cause odd & sporadic things

LOOSE NUT

Make certain the nut on the bottom of the antenna is tight.

If that nut is loose it will be the first one I have ever heard of..........mostly they have far too much Lock-Tite and people can't get them off and this may interfere with the connection and cause POOR reception ...jmho.....Mike :bbq:

My experience is always check the battery connections first. Don't use a screwdriver...use a wrench or socket.

:agree: mike! Have tried to take mine off twice with same results :gaah::gaah:

Since I haven't checked the OP connection on the bottom of the antenna I don't know if it is loose.

If it were tight or loctite insulated then the static wouldn't come and go.

Have you rode this route with your bud & have the same problem?:dontknow:
that would answer the geographic reception/interference end.
Secondly I would ask your bud to start a trip meter (has a trip timer) to verify when the error shows up. More info for dealer if they need to test ride for same amount of time to try & duplicate. (Might even get them to fill a tank of gas too:p) check all the connections yall can safely get access to. A go pro could be handy but not worth cost just for this. :coffee: Just few ideas to consider.

No, I've never ridden with him. We only met about three weeks and became FB friends. I do not know how many times this has happened nor where. I do know that a dealer has witnessed it but no diagnostic machines were on hand to determine its origin. Until they do they are at a loss like everyone else.

i was hoping in the vast forum if anyone else had the same occurrence.

Here, let me google it for you.

I had static on my AM/FM radio, it was caused by LED'S (that I had a can-am dealership install on the front fenders Amber side /Red Marker facing the driver) so I talked to the vender, they sent me a resister.

Now I do not have any static, AM/FM radio stations are clear. Good luck! Deanna

I have the same problem or maybe worse!

I have a 2012 RT and live in Phoenix area, as we ride the FM radio will suddenly sometimes mute itself, come back on, make popping noises from different speakers, at times various speakers will suddenly get real loud or will get real deep bass sounding. So.... Ride Now in Surprise has had it several times, they say they have check all the connections and everything is tight. I have a RPM1 warranty on it so they blamed the radio, so they put a new radio in it.....still does it. So they ask me to put my IPOD in it and ride listening to that. Doesn't do all the above things but it does change the songs repeatedly by itself.... there is not a way on the mode thumb aux to do this... I made sure it was secure in the trunk and not getting bumped around, and it randomly will change songs by itself. So my guy at Ride Now is suppose to be talking to Can AM guys in Canada..... We will see???? Will update you if we can get this Gremlin out of this thing!!

Suddenly: I don't feel so bad! :D
I've never had any FM reception with my radio.
(Well; if I park under a tower: I'll get a signal... :opps:)
My bike is going in tomorrow for a definitive diagnosing of this issue...
Plus a non-functioning cruise control
And the replacement of the four speakers. ( I popped an OEM speaker at SpyderFest)
By tomorrow evening; I'm hoping that the bike will be better than new!

AM is worse, but . . .

I have a similar problem with my 2015 ST Limited. AM stations pop in and out, even local ones. (I mean, they suddenly get louder and softer.) It's not ignition noise, nor power line noise, those are different. The most noticeable effect is that the stations seem to be almost fluttering, more like a shortwave station! Sometimes there would be alternator whine, especially when changing gears. Yes, it's an SE-5.

I waited until it was happening all the time and took it to the dealer. Their first "solution" was to switch to FM. "No, we've gotta do AM," I said. And loud! They soon found it was a loose antenna nut, supposedly causing all of my symptoms. When they brought it back, it was working fine. For about a week, then every once in a while, the same thing would happen.
Last week it was again too bad to ignore. When I got home from my ride, I turned the engine off. Pure sound, until I touched the antenna, and got the same popping effect.
Should have done that sooner, I guess, but the antenna had felt tight. Now, when I pull it back and let go, the sound pops with the antenna swing, really neat effect.

I phoned the dealer. Of course as soon as I told them what was happening, they said bring it in, they knew what to do.

But here's the question I asked them, and now ask the Forum. Is a simple antenna nut that hard to tighten so it will stay tight? Loctite is not a good conductor, so I would have thought they'd be relying on lock washer teeth cutting into clean, bare metal as their first line of defense. Then a chase nut or some other way to keep things tight, perhaps?

From what i discovered on my 13 there is a 1"braided flat cable ground between the amp & antenna held by a "dragons tooth" washer & nut no lock-tight on mine but sum funky mounting (amp in way for Smooth Spyder back rest). One of the first farkles i did was change my stock antenna to a universal one found at pepboys

picks up all stations, in my area anyway. Also check your settings for "automatic volume". Know its in there somewhere but it has: off, low & high preset adjustments. Might be helping your problem. ¿

I wasn't there but I still care! POW /MIA VETS
