• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Radar detectors...Opinions?

I figure if I keep riding with some of the fast riders around here, I better invest in a radar detector.:pray: Who has what and how do you like them? I looked at the Valentine 1 but cant justify the price when it could get caught in the rain at any time with the wacky Florida weather. Thanks for any suggestions...Dave:chat:

Passport, fuzz buster and many others...

I have used many of these devices over the years. I currently use a passport. All that I have owned get false alerts from automatic door openers when passing businesses along the interstate.

Some states, like Virginia, they are illegal. Disguise them as a hard pack of cigarettes or a small box of tissues. Virginia in the past has been known to impound a vehicle if the unit was mounted to the dash. I lived there for 30 years so I know it did happen. Then you need a lawyer to get the vehicle back. They have also been known to stop vehicles with portable GPS units laying on the dash because they look simular to radar detectors.

If you do use one get a good one that also senses laser guns. Getting a good name brand unit will lessen the number of false alerts./ken

I personally have one Passport X50 (somewhere) and two Valentine Ones.

Some have a little bit better radar reception than the Valentine BUT the differences are minimal as all are far out beyond the reach of the radar operator.

The V1 is the only one which tells you where the radar is... front, sides or rear. I find that indispensable.

There are weather-proof cases for all detectors available. Don't have the sources handy... sorry.

Now, with that said, none of the conventional detectors provide adequate protection from LASER. Once you know it's there, its too late. My last two tickets have been from LASER. I'm a regular customer (once per year) of online driving schools. :yikes:

BTW, ride tailgunner at the rear... use the others for "radar bait". :D

"Hiding" your radar detector is not a good thing in Virginia unless your detector is of new technology so as not to be recognized by the trooper through technical means.

Take a look at this link.

Monkei... good update information

Good update on what is happening in this arena. When I moved south in 1997 we could still disguise them as I pointed out without them knowing. Or if they were using detectors... none of the group I traveled with never got detected.

Thanks again for a good update./Ken

Radar detectors are a good thing to have. But do not believe that a detector will prevent you from getting a ticket. The practice with most policemen/women is to use radar to slow traffic down. If the law wants to ticket you, they will use the radar when they see you speeding, lock on you and your ticket is a guarantee. But, if it makes one feel better having one, go for it. It's a nice ornament.

Went with the Adaptiv TPX after reading a lot about them on Pashnit.com website. Quick install, speaker in helmet ( wireless) and a flashing LED warning light

Don't waste your money on a radar detector. As a past law enforcement officer, I can tell you that they simply don't work. Most agencies are going to laser which has pin point accuracy and only produces a signal that a detector will pick up for a second while the target is being tracked. Same with conventional radar. The officer observes a vehicle that he/she believes to be exceeding the speed limit, makes a visual estimate and verifies that with the speed measuring device. As a rule of thumb, an officer that stops a violator for speeding and sees a radar detector is substantially less inclined to give a warning than to someone who doesn't have one. Oh and in Pennsylvania, only Troopers use radar. All municipal law enforcement agencies use VASCAR, which is a fancy stop watch that gives no signal at all.
Ride safe.
