Quick mileage update...

merely your OPINION- I don't consider it wasteful at all......

Actually, not my opinion...browse the internet to see all the stories about how higher octane does nothing for ya...not much at all in the other direction. I posted a few links on another thread some time ago...can't find it now though.

Regardless, it's fact...but hey...who cares! Pump the expensive stuff, it's all good!

Can't we just drop this issue. Some of notice a difference in the higher octane some don't. To each his own and no sense arguing opinions here when its been done time and time again!!

I find that 93 octane works only after u drink a shot of BRP oil and as you take the 52 windshields that u bought but dont fit and strike the se5 in the switch gate with it it may get better mileage but the BUDS may report you as a molester.

Did my first long trip this past weekend, put on a little over 500 miles in two days. On the trip down all highway I got 25.7 mpg. That seem low but my average speed was between 70 to 80 and a few time up to 100 for a bit, did not check local miles but it did seem like it was better than highway. I also have a Burgman 650 and I am used to 50 mpg so I hope my low mpg's on my spyder was due to my highway speed and not the mods I did (hindle, Ken's o2 and air filter)

I have something interesting to post...I've been getting about 30 mpg for some time...well, I checked my tire pressure and it was 10 and 13 in front, 25 in the rear...that means that when I had my last service done, they didn't check...argh!

I just put the pressures up to 20 in front and 30 in the back...amazing that I've been riding on low pressure for a while...dangerous and extremely inefficient...:yikes:

I'll check in the next week or two to see if I can get over 30mpg...should be able to now...

Affirmative on the RPM observation. I really haven't had it down to the 3500 range to cruise, but I have been getting 35 - 40 mpg and runn around 6,000 - 7,000 rpm pretty consistantly. I have the SE5 (LOVE it btw)

I've been waiting for someone to make this observation.

All you guys that are trying to run at low RPM's and crying for a 6th gear for "better mileage" should try running this motor in the RPM range it was designed to run in and you may be a lot happier with the range of your Spyder.

Are you saying that running it at 6-7k RPM is more efficient than running it at lower RPMs?? How can that be?

:congrats: on the better milage.

I can absolutely confirm that observatrion. I run 5,500 - 6,500 usual cruising. With limited acceleration and decelleration (i.e. Highway) I am getting 38avg with the occassional 40mpg tank.

about 6000km now and it had been improving up to about 5000km (3000mi) then levelled off

Star Cruiser is also posting mpg in imperial measurements, slightly larger than U.S. gallon.

Actually ot is converted from Litres /100km to US mpg. Imperial would be about 20% better. I am not sure if anyone uses Imp Gal anymore (Any brits online that can confirm?)

Bone Crusher - The power band is at the higher rpm range so it runs more efficiently at higher rpm. As a rule of thumb I find running most engines at approximately 1/2 of the redline will give you peak power. It is not only how much you put in the engine (obviously less at lower rpm) but the efficiency at which it releases power.

"I run my Spyder on diesel. It makes me feel like I'm jet propelled seeing all the smoke coming out of the exhaust."

Now that would be most awsome - Running the :spyder:on diesel - with two big huge stacks in the back. I like it!

Our Spyders are such fun machines. MPG, oil, octane are subjects that will be debated until forever and it's good to hear everyone's thoughts on the subjects...gets our brain gears to run smoother! I think the hardest one to figure out precisely is MPG. It will be hard to find 2 people that fill their gas tanks alike. Just a few tenths of a gallon will calculate to +/- differences with someone else's MPG. How we ride will contribute to vast MPG differences. Probably the most important issue in gasoline consumption is not to run dry on an outing...that would really put a damper on it all. Let's all ride and enjoy, but most importantly, do it safely.

Amen, I am the first to admit that I did not buy L'il Miss Muffet to save on gas. I really want her to put a premium on FUN. As long as there is enough gas not to run out..........I earn a Big A$$ Grin.

I must admit I was a little disappointed at first in the mpg's. Compared to my bike it is not all that great. On the other hand, compared to my sled when I ride aggressively (120 miles on a 10 gal. tank), the Spyder gets great gas mileage. I never think about the milage when it comes to my sled so I'll try not to think about it with the Spyder.
