Questions on Corbin vs stock seat rebuild

So I am considering a custom seat as I am uncomfortable in the stock rt limited seat, probably due to my weight of 260 pounds. I am 5'11 and I feel like the lip of the rear of the seat is pushing into me, the seat is compressing down, and my precious gems are continually getting crushed by the forward cowling of the seat. Is the Corbin the best answer? Is there anything else out there? Should I just have my local seat builder in Chesapeake do the mods? And will moving the seat ridge back an inch or two mean my wife (similar dimensions) will have an uncomfortable ride? Any help is appreciated. Visiting the California factory is not an option, nor is going weeks without a saddle!

 Your description just made me squirm... :yikes: I've got no advice; you should be a journalist after that colorful missive... :D

Oh! Corbin would be the best place to start looking for relief...

I could ramble on for hours about Corbin, Russell, ect. seats. I think the best thing would be to suggest to you to scroll up to the top where it says "search". Click on that and type in Seats RT or Corbin Seats RT and then go through the MANY discussions that have been had on this issue. I think you'll find it quite informative and will offer you a wide range of opinions that you can make an intelligent choice. JMHO.

I am new owner and at 6'5" and 330 lbs myself I have the same issue (and one of the few things so far about my Spyder that has not been perfect). If about 2 inches could be carved off the little backrest bump (taken from the passengers seat area) I think things would be fine. I have looked with my wife sitting on it and it appears there is enough extra room with her on it that she would still be fine. BUT, I dont know how involved, who to go to, etc.. just modifying my current seat would be. I am scared to buy a Corbin, etc.. without having set on one like I would be getting.

I am on my 5th or 6th Corbin seat over the years and I am a fan. Call them up because I think you may be able to give them your height, weight, etc. I got in a big hurry for my RT and had to send it back & have them cut it a couple of times. I am 5' and not sharing my weight.

I got our Corbin this spring after being uncomfortable on the stock seat last year and have not been disapointed. Get the drivers backrest and the lamonster cut. You will feel more in control of the spyder. I only have about 700 miles so far and I'm told it will only get better. Good luck on your decision.

We've got probably 20,000 combined miles on our Corbin seats (on both our RS & RT) and absolutely love them. Highly recommend you do as mentioned above, search out the multitude of threads about seats and call the factory.... they'll work with you. Also, check out Lamonster's cut... sounds like you might like it even more than the comfy Corbin standard seat.

So far as the back rest, look at the different styles/shapes before you order. I ordered their small one, and really like it. But the first one they sent me was the one with a hole in the middle of it and a cut away for the backseat passengers legs to fit ..... and I thought it looked like a toilet seat :roflblack: :roflblack: :roflblack: . . . that's just my opinion, not worth the paper it's printed on.:joke::yes:

Ryding in comfort makes all the difference in the world.

slight correction and thank you

I have been informed by my wife that my jewels are semi-precious at best, and more likely to just be an average couple of stones with very little intrensic value. But she thanks all of you for your input, and I will put a call in to Corbin for a configuration that should fit us.

IT'S A HIGH RISK PROPOSITION WITHOUT TRIAL!! Yes, that was a shout. Even sitting on another bike will not let you know how a seat will feel to you after 500 miles.

If it were my decision, I would opt for a non-heated Corbin, with the Lamonster cut, which you could sell in a flash on the Forum. This would NOT be true for a Russell or other custom seat. Buy it, try it, and then move to a custom. JMHO

Are there any photos anywhere comparing the stock seat to the Corbin? I would love to see a side by side comparison shot to see if and how much room it might add for driver.

Also, in reading, the difference between a standard Corbin and one with the "Lamont" cut, is __________________? Lamont cut a bit more roomy?

Va Beach to Ormand Beach, FL, two nice days grinding down I-95! No need to go to Calif. But call first. I worked with Sergio, 800-223-4332, ext 316. Great guy and he will make sure you're satisfied. Tell him you needs and see what he says.

Then, I'll bet you enjoy the ride home a lot more than you did the ride down!

We rate our Corbin seat as the best mod we've ever done to any bike we've owned (Goldwing's, Harley's, etc). The Corbin felt hard at first, but after a couple of hours riding home, I mentioned to my wife that for the first time my butt didn't heart.

Just do it... :2thumbs:

I am 6'6" tall and top 300lbs. I had the same issues with the stock seat not being a good fit for me. I did not think getting a Corbin seat sent to me even with the measurements they use would be just right. I ended up searching for a custom M/C seat maker. I found Mr Ed Motos in Albany OR. He is a small shop who has been at this for several decades. I spent all day with him as he took measurement and then built the seat, had me test it then made adjustments until we both felt it was right. He was able to keep the PE # patch in the finished seat. I am one happy ryder now, long rydes with no back or leg soreness or anything else sore. Total cost $500.

Now you say I am not close to him, I would say do an internet search for your area and go interview a couple of the seat makers, ask for examples of their work. They will have pics and should have some references from happy ryders.

I messed around this weekend using "filler" of towels, small cushions, etc.. and have have decided that if I had about 2 more inches of room to scoot back (thats about all I would think I can steal from passenger area based on wife sitting there while I tested), that would help a decent bit.

BUT, I think even more it would help tremendously if I could raise the seat height up higher several inches (almost as high as passenger area). This seemed to give me a lot of relief and get my "knees up in my face thing" kinda livable. It even made potential forward highway pegs or floorboards make much more potentially helpful.

With this potential raise in height for a big tall guy like myself cause any severe "center of gravity" issues? I did not sense that it would that much with legs still bent a lot and able to still squeeze the sides tight with knees when hard cornering, etc..

I guess the only option for this to be done would be find a custom more local seat modding guy to special make it for me off my current seat?

I have ordered in an Airhawk first to see if that slight raise in height and softness might help enough to live with things as is for a while.

As with all things in my years, being 6'5" and 330lbs always means more uncomfortable and lots of modding needed on things or unable to just drive some cars, etc.. LOL.

the airhawk should only give you half inch more height. you only want to fill it slightly. if you over fill it will defeat the purpose of the airhawk. we love ours...plus keeps the seat cooler in the sun and they are waterproof... tested on the way to and from spyderfest nojoke

see the instructions for the seat... you want it to be almost flat just enough air to keep you from being flat. the air will move around the pockets giving you the comfort as you ride.

There is the option of "jewel surgery". However, the Corbin would be less expensive and less painful.
