Question for those who have done the 14,000 mile service

I am approaching the 14,000 mile service on my 2013 RTS SE5. The service manager at my dealer says the cost is about $2,000.:yikes: He says the big ticket items are the valve check and replacing the bearing seals and wear sleeves of the rear axle. I understand that the valve clearance adjustment can be postponed. I do not see any problems with the tracking on the belt (symptom of wear sleeves). I want to maintain the Spyder, but at that cost, I need to save a little money. Can I postpone the rear axle bearing and wear sleeves? Is this a fair assessment of the cost for the 14,000 mile service?

That's about twice what it should cost for everything on the 14K service(parts & labor). With an hourly labor rate of $100.00.

Have them itimize their charges, or look elsewhere for service.

Yes, you should do the rear bearings and seals. Valves.....while many are not checking them because of the expense, you need to remember what is spelled out in the warranty section of your OM and be prepared to assume resposibility should an upper end problem happen to present itself. jm2c Choices.

The cost is because they want to change brake fluid which is 3 hour service charge. Also coolent change 1 hour. I had mine done at dealer with out doing these. The cost was still 1,000 with parts. But I had them change exhaust gaskets and plugs. I did not have valves done.

I have never seen it quoted that high. I would check with another nearby dealer.
I went two rear tires then changed rear axle bearings myself at around 27 or 28K.

Wow..!!

I would check around...I do my own work and only replace as needed. Never heard costs that high. Check your manual for the factory recommendations. Good luck...:thumbup:

That surprises me usually their prices are good and PJ is a good tech. I would call and ask to talk to PJ about what it includes and why it is so much higher than other dealers. You can try Columbia power sports They are a Platinum dealer only one around.

14K service used to be done at 12K not so long ago. BRP changed the reqirements for 49 of the 50 states about a year ago. If interested there are 12K service costs here. The increase to 14K was a when to do, change, more than it was, what needs to be done.

There have been a few threads about the valve checks and service. $800 - $1000 is the most I have paid or seen. $2000 is a real rip off.

The big question is should I, or shouldn't I? My 2008 had the valve check done at 12,000 and needed no adjustments. My 2010 had the valve check done at 28,000 and needed no adjustments. The new 2014 RT's do not need valve checks at all.

If you do the valve check service, make sure they really did it. Mercenary dealers may charge for and not perform the service.

The jury is out and it is your decision. Most people have not done the valve checks.

On my GS up until 17,000 I did oil changes and Greasing nipples.
At that time I replaced rear wheel and 3 Bearings, changed plugs to iridium and plug wires, changed coolant.
With tire total of about $375 and mostly cost for parts and I know I did it!!!nojoke

Actually, I plan to call Velocity back and see what they say. If they don't come down, I'll go to Columbia. I didn't make the appointment yet, as I have about 500 miles to go. In warm weather that would go quickly, but now, it will take a couple of weeks.
