Is your Spyder tranny a LOT noisier than your harley, Honda, or Yammy? Mine is noisier than any bike I've ever had other than my URAL!

Gear whine. It shifts fine. All the gears whine a lot louder than my Harley's fifth gear, and Baker has a thousand dollar kit to eliminate Harley's fifth gear whine!opcorn:
Noisier how!!:dontknow:

:agree: The belt tension spec was lowered considerably, in a recent service bulletin. Too much belt tension also leads to premature bearing failure and is thought to be a cause of the front sprocket and output shaft failures. If your mileage is 6K or over, and the front sprocket has not been retorqued, have that bulletin done, too.Check the belt tension (to tight :dontknow.

Oil viscosity is not going to change appreciably with multiviscosity oils in a liquid-cooled engine. Water cooled engines are made to run in a narrow range of acceptable temperatures, and for starting over a wider temperature range, the oil adjusts. Yep, it's wishful thinking. These engines all have their own sounds. Get used to what they are...and worry only if they change. My RT clunks loudly, especially shifting into first from neutral. It also has a lot of gear/engine whine. I was hoping that once we got some cooler temps, and the oil thickened up a little, it would quiet down. Wishfull thinking???
Well.. we recently sold a Ural Patrol, Honda and Yamaha Venture... but still have an Electra Glide, Spyder SM5 and Yamaha Road Star in the garage.
Granted the SM5 only has 600 miles on it.. but it's drivetrain noises are quiet compared to the 'Glide and 'Star.
Might be worth taking to a dealer and getting it checked. If it's considered 'normal'.. keep a copy of the service order in case some major problem creeps up later.
I don't have the gear engine whine, but I sure do have the "CLUNK" when shifting from neutral to first. It's usually the loudest when I first crank her up.

Question for Harley, Honda, Yammy riders:

Don't take it too hard. I'd plumb forgot about Triumphs when I posted. My last Triumph was a Cub 200. I took the motor/tranny out and put it in my Whizzer Sportsman, building my first "chopper" in 1960 But I DO have a W650, the best British bike ever made in Japan!I am hurt. You didn't ask about Triumphs.
