There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Question for Harley, Honda, Yammy riders:

Is your Spyder tranny a LOT noisier than your harley, Honda, or Yammy? Mine is noisier than any bike I've ever had other than my URAL!

Gear whine. It shifts fine. All the gears whine a lot louder than my Harley's fifth gear, and Baker has a thousand dollar kit to eliminate Harley's fifth gear whine!
Check the belt tension (to tight :dontknow:).

:agree: The belt tension spec was lowered considerably, in a recent service bulletin. Too much belt tension also leads to premature bearing failure and is thought to be a cause of the front sprocket and output shaft failures. If your mileage is 6K or over, and the front sprocket has not been retorqued, have that bulletin done, too.

:agree: +1. I hear what the gentleman is saying, there is a bit of gear whine but it's not excessive at all on either of my Spyders. I've had belt tension checked/ajusted on both.

My 08 manual had some whine to the trans, but my 2010 RT manual has no whine at all but the gear clunk on up shifts is much louder. 3,000 miles and has not changed at all or seem to bother anything.

gear noise...

My RT clunks loudly, especially shifting into first from neutral. It also has a lot of gear/engine whine. I was hoping that once we got some cooler temps, and the oil thickened up a little, it would quiet down. Wishfull thinking???

Oil viscosity is not going to change appreciably with multiviscosity oils in a liquid-cooled engine. Water cooled engines are made to run in a narrow range of acceptable temperatures, and for starting over a wider temperature range, the oil adjusts. Yep, it's wishful thinking. These engines all have their own sounds. Get used to what they are...and worry only if they change.

Mine was fine for the first year. Then got louder and louder until finally the bearing failed and most internals replaced at over $4K cost. Luckily I had a month left on warranty.

MAKE SURE TO CHANGE THE BELT TENSION BEFORE THIS HAPPENS TO YOU!

I don't have the gear engine whine, but I sure do have the "CLUNK" when shifting from neutral to first. It's usually the loudest when I first crank her up.

Well.. we recently sold a Ural Patrol, Honda and Yamaha Venture... but still have an Electra Glide, Spyder SM5 and Yamaha Road Star in the garage.

Granted the SM5 only has 600 miles on it.. but it's drivetrain noises are quiet compared to the 'Glide and 'Star.

Might be worth taking to a dealer and getting it checked. If it's considered 'normal'.. keep a copy of the service order in case some major problem creeps up later.

I had the opposite experience. My Spyder gear whine is muh louder than my Road King, Yamaha 1100, and W650 - right on par with my URAL. But I plan on including that in my complaints when I bring it in for the heisitation when I roll the throttle on.

Clunk is normal, Now if you really want to hear a loud clunk, drop a Honda 929 into first gear.:yikes:

I am hurt. You didn't ask about Triumphs. :D

.
Don't take it too hard. I'd plumb forgot about Triumphs when I posted. My last Triumph was a Cub 200. I took the motor/tranny out and put it in my Whizzer Sportsman, building my first "chopper" in 1960 But I DO have a W650, the best British bike ever made in Japan!
