Question about a Battery Tender

Installing a Battery Tender connector. Is it true you want to hook your quick connector directly to the battery and not the charging posts under the seat? Thanks

I use the posts [remote] under the seat easy enough for me.
But some like to go directly to the battery. either way it will charge the battery.

I do not recommend using the charging terminals. For one thing, the ground post has a separate nut, that is a bear to get to to tighten. Do yourself a favor and take the extra time to hook up the pigtail directly to the battery. If you want to use the charging terminals, use alligator clips for charging.

+1 Followed your protocol for this a looong time ago and all is good...

Thanks for all of your assistance and advice. I am all wired up for my battery tender and it really needed it. It's been charging for 2 hours on full power so far. I did have a low battery indication last time I had it out. :2thumbs:

It is true.

Not that you need my two cents added to HDX's and Scotty's, but I listened to them last year about it, and it's the most bestest.

The little extension connector slips away in it's hideaway spot under the seat (without raising the seat) while riding, too. Nice, easy access.

I attached Gerbing pigtails directly to the battery. I then zip-tied them to the cable that runs to the passenger seat sensor & tuck the Gerbing pigtails in the same hole under the seat the passenger seat sensor comes out of. When I need access to them, they're easy to fish out because they're zip-tied and won't fall out of reach. I then bought the Gerbing male ends that have the same connection on the other end that my Yuasa battery tenders have. Now the Gerbing pigtails double as battery tender connections. I'm also in the process of creating some other wires that plug into the Gerbing pigtails that will have a 12v receptacle for use with my Slime air compressor, which needs 15 amps.

Seems to be a simple solution for me & can be used for a wide variety of applications. Plus there's no need to drill holes in panels to permanently mount plugs.

Scotty, if you remove that bolt on the negative charging terminal, you find that hole it goes through is threaded for an 8mm bolt. I drilled out the cable end that goes to the battery to go on the larger bolt & replaced the end of the wire that goes to the fuel tank with a larger connector & ran an 8mm bolt in place with some medium strength Threadlock.

Mark; I used your method of attaching the charger quick connect cable to the terminals on my wife's RT-S. I dreaded the thought of removing all the panels to get at the battery. Although it was a pain to drill out the terminal leads, this method was successful in the end.

I fail to understand the thought process that led to using a bolt and nut through a threaded mount. Perhaps they found that, when it came time to connect the terminals, the 8mm bolt wouldn’t pass through the connectors. Rather than change out the connectors it was simpler to use a smaller, longer bolt and nut. Seems backward to me.

Thanks for posting.:doorag:
