Question: 2014 RT Rear Tire - any luck with BRP to help with replacement labor cost

Soft tires

Motorcycles have tires that wear pretty quickly. Just a fact. That Spyders get 20,000 on the front tires and 7-10,000 on the rear is typical and normal. And great! Tires that stick prevent crashes! Remember, it is not a car, so don't expect car mileage. Be happy they stick!

:agree:

its no doubt the Kenda tires supplied on some of the 2014 are substandard... I am waiting for someone to have a blowout or a wreck because these "premature wearing out of one of these factory installed substandard tires" and find a good lawyer... I bet BRP will wish they had replaced these defective tires... sometimes it does not pay to "roll the dice"

Hi, this is a really old thread and BRP changed the compound for the rear tire around June of 2014 so if your tire has a date of 2614 or later it should be the new compound. The Arachnid is a soft tire like the Kenda so don't expect to get any better wear out of it. I have worn out 1 Kenda and 2 Arachnids on my 2014 RT. If you are looking for longer tire wear try a car tire like a Kumho Ecsta AST

bought mine and started driving in april 2014, so old compound. when i talked to brp, they never mentioned changing compounds, told me i had to buy same tire, pay and wait for them to "look into it".

In light of the fact that BRP denied for 2 years any heat issues on the 13 and only did something when forced to by the government. Don't hold your breath for relief on any other cheap pathetic issues on your bike. Just bite the bullet and write a check. Thankfully, when they work the bike is a blast to ride. I will say that I am surprised that they found a great solution for the heat issue.

I know there's been a lot of threads on tires for the 2014 RT rear tire....

Just wondering if anyone has been successful for BRP to help out with costs for the first replacement?

I have my 2014 RT going into the dealer in about 3 weeks and will be replacing the OEM rear tire with the Kumho Ecsta AST (same size as OEM). The Spyder will have around 7500 miles on it by then and don't dare go much more with that OEM tire.

I've sent an email to BRP, but they said to talk to the dealer. It's not a dealer issue, it's a spec. issue with BRP. All I would ask BRP to do is pay for the labor to replace it as I already purchased the tire.

Anyways, any advice / input would be appreciated. I will take photos and odometer reading for documentation -- here's what it looks like now.....

Edit Oooooooooooooops. I see this is a 2014 thread.

I believe early on in 2014 there were a couple people that posted their tire was replaced by the dealer. I am thinking this was a customer service thing rather than a BRP sanction thing.

Your tire looks just like my original looked like at 8,900 miles. I replaced it--but was not given any special deals. The replacement tire has almost 12,000 on it and is starting to show the center wear. I have consistently got about 15,000 out of BRP OEM Kendas.

I am going in tomorrow for my 20,000 mile oil/filter service. Am going to have the rear tire pressure dropped from 28 to 26 to see if "ballooning" will be lessened, hence less wear to the center. I plan on replacing the tire at the beginning of next season.

Let us know what you find out.

Could last as long as oil change cycle

I was at the dealer on Friday getting repairs done from being rear ended back in June. I asked about having the rear tire changed and going to a non Kenda tire. My dealer does not have a problem mounting a different tire. He seemed to think that I will be doing great if I get 8k miles out of my tire since he sees them come in with only 3500 to 4500 miles for a new tire. I would just like to see the tire make it has long as an oil change. I have a tire dealer who can get me whatever tire I decide to go with, no questions asked as far as vehicle. He even sells Kenda car tires and said people like them.
Part of my repairs was a laser alignment. What a difference it made in the handling.

Since we've been talking about getting more life out of our tires; :lecturef_smilie: don't forget about the rear wheel bearings...
Since it's usually about the handiest to service them when doing a tire change; keep in mind that we've had instances of them failing at about 25,000 miles or so. :yikes:
Don't let your tires outlast the other important parts back there!

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. When I had my Harley this seemed to be the forgotten thing. No one could understand it when every other time I replaced a tire I had the bearings replaced.

Good evening to all on the site! New to CanAm Spyders and to the site. We're picking up my wife's 2014 RT-S this Thursday! My question is: Can you get a Michelin tire in the correct size for the rear? We're trading in a GL-1500/ Motortrike (and an '07 Yamaha VStar 1100 Classic) on the Spyder. Can't wait!
I own a Honda Valkyrie which I'm going to trike next year. I've always liked trikes and my wife fell in love with the Spyder once she test drove it! Any info on other brands of tires would be apprecated.
Thanks,

However approx. 500 people here have put 215/60-15's on the rear ( I'm one also )....and this size actually corrects the speedo error ..........this size is any tire not just Michelin........Mike

I'm one that is running a 215/60/15 on the rear for 13,000 miles. It's a Michelin Primacy.

We have been pleased with the Kumho Ecsta AST at getting 20,000 miles plus and that bought another as the replacement for the wifes 2015 RTS after the Kenda was done at 13,000 miles. Since we had put Michelin defenders on the front of the 2011 RT about 20,000 miles ago (14" on older model) and they still look almost new, I decided to try a Michelin Defender on the back in the 215/60/15 size. It is about 5% bigger (circumference) then the OEM tire, but the computer has accepted it and I expect it to run 40,000 miles plus on this light motorcycle. It also puts the speedometer correct to GPS speed.

If I was a canyon racer, I probably would opt for a softer tire, but I like the wide/deep 9/32" grooves that will wear and wear some more compared to the 7/32" of rubber that the others start with new (also Kendas have the center rain bar 4/32" above the base).

Well in Vermont we call it " the twisties ", but we are on the same page........Anywho I have a Michelin Hydro-Edge which is also a pretty hard compound tire.......and I do ride at 9/10 th's in the " twistie's " ...I am quite satisfied with it's holding capabilities.....not bad in the wet either ......just sayin........Mike
