• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Putting it back together...

I did some major disassembly this weekend to install the HMT tail light, the BRP trailer hitch and the wiring harness. Went back together perfectly and I didn't even have any parts left over ... except ...

My trunk won't close. The colored panel (part # 708300527) that goes immediately underneath the trunk seems to be a bit high or perhaps too far back, but it is keeping the trunk from closing enough to latch. It has two lower tabs that I have locked in their proper place around the trunk and saddlebag pulls, and an upper tab that seems to go underneath the black plastic section that hold the two latches.

Thoughts? I really can't ride until I can get this closed and I can't find anything obviously wrong.

OH YES YOU CAN

Until you get it fixed .....Tie a piece of strong string/cord to the inside of the trunk ( you don't mean the FRUNK ,correct ). and then tie a weight on the string/cord......the cord etc, should be short enough so there is no slack and the lid stays closed...............I wouldn't waste a minute of riding time until you get it fixed......JMHO.....Mike

Little checking..!!

check with Bob Denman who just suffered through a similar issue. He got it done but was out ryding today enjoying all his hard work...

i would check the each side pieces for fitment. The center fits snug against the trunk. Sounds like something is just off a bit. If you're sure everything is correct. Loosen screws a bit and readjust

the center large piece has a tab in the center that if it is not in the correct place it causes problems, try to adjust it so the tab fits .

Yes, I'm aware of the tab but unsure where it goes. There is a slot on the black plastic piece that holds the latch, but they don't seem to mate.

Play with it and line it up, it has to mate.

What Joe said. I had the same issue...took it apart and re-aligned everything and it was fine. It's a kinda tricky fitment, but everything should line up properly. If any of the screws seem like they're not lined up right, take it apart again and retry it. Wish I had taken some photos, but no such luck...

And let us know the outcome.

So - it seems obvious that the tab goes in the slot but it really doesn't want to,, and that will raise the piece even higher (I think)! Is that correct?

When I recently did mine, I found that the tab had folded over during my failed attempts at reassembly. It ended up breaking off and then everything fit fine.

As others have said, the center tab is probably what is causing the problem. I have removed the piece that you are talking about twice and both times the alignment of the 3 tabs when putting it all back together is a fussy fitment. Getting them in place first is essential. Then keep them in place while you fit the two outside ends. Maybe a second set of hands will help. I wouldn't break that middle tab if I could help it. It will fit, just have to be patient.

You're correct, very messy fitment. Does the tab come from ABOVE the slot and slide in, or is the tab used to go BELOW the slot so that the tab and upper piece of body sandwich in the black plastic?

The outside pieces don't like sliding in once the center piece is (sort of) in place.

Ursamajor - your's may be the extra hand I need.

Just let me know when you need me.

The three tabs slide down from above into their respective slots, not sandwiched. You are correct, the outside ends don't seem to like fitting into their places but will with a little pressure exerted. They kind of get hung up on the passenger grab handles. You can try keeping the tabs in place and get one side in first and then the other.
I was afraid of breaking the outside pieces but they are probably stronger than they appear and did do it without help as I know others have done.
Good luck,

Gary

And in conclusion...

I went home over lunch today mad and determined to make this work, and I did. First, it is indeed a tricky piece to put in place properly because of the front sections that go in beside the passenger grab rails.

I put the left front side in place (without screws), then wrestled with the center section. The two lower-center tabs go in from as above as was obvious, but I was previously unsure as to how to handle the top tab, it really didn't look like it should go in from above .. but it did.

I got all three tabs in place using a downward motion on the body panel, put a single screw in to hold it in place, then wrestled the right side in beside the passenger grab rail, then screwed it all in. It works as well as ever.

Thanks to all the advice I got. Duct tape was appearing to be a pretty reasonable option, but this was better.

In my next life, I plan to be rich enough that I just pay for work like this!
